Title: Governor talking mandatory evacuation for Irene
Post by photojoe on 08/25/11 at 14:29:39

So, Governor Christie has declared a state of emergency and is talking about mandatory evacuations for the coastal towns, one of which I'm in. I'm eight blocks from the ocean on the top floor. Not worried about getting flooded out, but am concerned with being ordered to leave my home. National Guard is at the ready. I figure, hey, I have what I need so leave me alone. After Katrina, a lesson was learned. First they take your guns, then ship you to some crowded building to fight over crackers.

I have a bunch of snack-packs, coffee, mac and cheese, beans, candles, flashlights, toilet paper. I'll make my own gas to cook with.

I'm also prepared to defend myself should the need arise.

if you decide to ignore any evac order i hope you and your structure
survive...

Yea,.. don't just worry about flooding,.. hows the structure, windows, and the roof...
100+ mph winds...

You might consider gathering up valuables and some survival gear and heading inland for a night...
.. or not...

Good luck... ;)...

Ive seen pics of Palm trees with a 2X4 run thru it 20 feet off he ground. Ive seen one with a sheet of plywood sliced thru, about 6 feet off the ground. A 2X4 could fly right thru a wallon a frame house, or window on a brick house, Staying home when a hurrican is bearing down just isnt a real good move.

Yes, the bug out bag is ready and I'm aware of the dangers. The kicker is that I have to work on Sunday when it's supposed to hit. My job? Photographing the devastation caused by Ms. Irene. We had a meeting at the paper today deciding on my approach. I'm to travel a 15 mile stretch of the coastal roads from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Somebody has to document this thing, and I'm the chosen one.

I was down at a friends place in Hollywood, Fl during Andrew and saw first hand what a hurricane can do. Not pretty.

So your job is asking you to put
your life on the line for some photo's?
Hmmm and your willing to put yourself
in more of harms way by not evacuating
your building?
Well I do hope all turns out well for you.
Let us know how things work out, if
your able to. Best of luck.. :) kim

If you gotta go up and down the coastline, I hope they've rented you a military hummer.

Sounds exciting, I hope you manage to do what your employer needs without exposing yourself to too much danger.

Yeah the taking of guns from people IN THEIR OWN HOMES after Katrina by our own freaking military was absolutely unconstitutional. They should have been sued eight ways to sunday over that. Our founding fathers are turning over in their graves.

Hey thanks BH.

With my job one has to take the good with the bad. I've had many wonderful assignments, and some not so wonderful. News photography is in my blood. I wouldn't expect anyone not in the business to understand. With all the life experience I've gained in 15 years of shooting, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Be safe all on the East Coast!

Uh, no, but I'm one of the shooters that can make an award winning picture, already have done.

and the employer "requires" you to take this risk.....hummmm?.......
Yes. A news photographer does not have the option to say no. A news agency or paper knows the risks, and if it get's to be too dangerous they will not want us to get harmed or killed for a photo, they will tell us to leave.

Job's fine thank you very much. An air boat sounds like fun!
