How much? Can you look at the wires & see if a mouse has eaten it all up?

a pitance.  definitely could part it out and make it back easy.
1st look was at a distance.
are there any hard to replace parts?
sounds like it has points, I know theres kits for twins.

Sure, get it and do a build thread!   :D

..says we in the peanut gallery with nothing to lose, yet are curious about this adventure/story.

But like you say, if it proves too troublesome if it can be parted out at a profit.. so the worst that can happen is you have to extract and sell the parts.  So get bike first, evaluate later.  ;)

I'd buy it.  Those CB's are pretty forgiving, and kinda bulletproof from what I've heard (never owned one).

If you do buy it, they make pretty sweet cafe racers, but if it was me I'd Kong the frame withing an inch of it's life.....

Absolutely! Restos are hot these days. Everything old is new again. Old CB's cleaned up really draw a crowd at Bike Night up here in Lowell Mass.

Versey

I had a Honda 500 four (73 mod.).   Yea it has points but they are easy and reliable.   It was bike of the year when it first came out.  Best I remember it got about 53 mpg. and had plenty of power (+- 45 HP).  And Smoth as any bike I've ever rode.

Kinda wish I would have kept it.   It wasn't agile , it was supper smoth.

I traided it for a Honda 250 Reb.   Liked the Reb. till I went up hill.

:P

At the risk of losing you to the other side, BUY IT! if you have the time and money. I bet it will run a little with new gas and a battery. I bought an XL75 kid's bike for 150 last week Spark but no gas? Really? It's 98 here so I'm waiting for winter. You meet the nicest people on a Honda. (Or a Savage) You have the skill. They are dead simple. I am old enough to remember The first 750. Do it. ;)

Honda changes things almost every year a bike is produced for no good reason so any parts will probably have to be that year only. Unlike Suzuki and Kawasaki who tend to build the same things for decades....i learned this about hondas from experience....i would never own another Honda!!!

Well it ain't 24 hrs later yet, and it ain't in my garage... yet.

But I got the rear wheel.   ;D

A beer drinking buddy said to him 20 someodd years ago that he could change the rear tire for him.  Must've ran out of beer and I guess he couldn't milk it for another day.

I got a bud at work that got bit by the 350-500-650-750 bug and he has bought and partially restored one of each.

Sold the 350 at a very good profit.

Sold the 500 at break even (too many parts needed for that one)

Sold the 750 at a profit before he even finished working on it.

Kept the 650  -- as Goldielocks said in the fairy tale -- "it was just right".

I was surprised at the amount of newly mgf'd aftermarket parts that are now available for the scoots -- you can buy old or new (expensive though).

The twins were gutless wonders, a CB350F could take them out on pretty much any surface. I had a CB500T and a CB350F at the same time.

The CB500F is worthwhile. And parts actually aren't that hard to come by.

My 1963 CL72 on the other hand...

Find me a really clean VT1100 ACE while you're out looking for supplemental toys. And the fully valanced fenders for it too...

Hard to tell, but it's got a brand new rear tire on a clean and polished rim.

Awesome!!!  Mr. Understatement fooled us again.  ;D

Now to replace that head gasket and see what's up with the mixture on the 2nd carb...

Now to cut 20 years of dust off.
f/a #2? if I can get 1 of the 4 to fire, I'll be counting my lucky stars.
#4 is already bound to miss   :o
I'll have to OF the air filter, change the front tire, fix the speedo, headlight and signal which took the brunt of the disabling fall.
The PO gave me a spare set of brake pad and Ig plate.  Although electronic ig is instore for it.

I was riding back when everyone had those 4-1 I thought the sound was the worst I ever heard. My 1980 GS 1000 had a different set up than all other 4s even the 750 Suzuki, the cross over was just in the 2 middle pipes,So what you had was the sound of 3 cylinders coming out of each pipe,Which gave it a slight off beat sound compare to all other 4 cylinders.I just drilled out the plugs in side the pipe with a long drill bit.I thought it really sound good for a four.

Seems like 4 to 1 would scavenge the best, Get that thing throwing the exhaust out right & it otta be quite a little hot rod.. Nothing like a Suzuki GS 1100,, but it otta be plenty of fun.

Had the bowls off tonight after soaking in seafoam for a day.
Well I was hoping just to fill it up with gas and see if it will kick over.
Opened up the drain to let the SF out and brown goo came out.
Nope this ain't gonna work.  Bowls came off and a tar like substance stuck to the bottom.  Oh what evil lurks in the bottom of 20 year static carbs.  And SF wouldn't touch it, just made it gummy.  It took acetone to cut it.

Let me state something I learned the hard way ....

Only take one carburetor apart at a time

Swapped me some slide assemblies once --- like to drove me nuts before someone told me they were different (RH & LH) on a Honda Twin CB 160.

Can't speak to the 4 bangers, but thought I'd mention the thought.

Might be a good excuse to buy that HF ultrasonic cleaner Gyrobob recommended.. and try the PineSol trick.  :D

Verslagen, Great bike. Electrics a little weak, but perfectly good for roadwork. If carbs and stuff weren't right, they could be hard to start cause 'lectrics were not good as today. It would be hard for me to change that good lookin stock ride, but it's your bike. With your knowledge of the Savage it should be no problem to get it going. Be patient. Enjoy the engineering. Glad you found it. Really great bikes.  :)

they got a 30/40 watt headlight and if you time the tyts out of the ignition you don't have enough juice to charge the battery.

I didn't want to talk bad about a great find for you. Okay, so they are a little weaker than I indicated, but don't grab a wire just to see. And you can sell it to a dealer for a conservation piece. Man, it's stock looking! If you don't have time to work on it, check with concours collectors or even the guys at Cycle World. Their editors are older guys who rode those things like my friends did. Seriously, they like those old bikes, and yours is one they can sneak past the wife 'cause it looks so good.    :)

I suppose we're all alike, we talk to death about the little problems we have.  And beotch about the 'great engineering'.  Hell when you're on 2 wheels... it's all good.   8-)

Title: Re: CB500 garage find
Post by verslagen1 on 10/31/11 at 10:05:03

I got the small ultrasonic cleaner.
since acetone was the only thing to cut the tar, I may fill it up with that.
And yes, they recommend doing 1 carb at a time.
mixing known good assemblies together may result in non functioning ones.
They are only slightly different, left side have drain plugs on the left side and vice versa.
Probably only going to take them apart enough to change all the seals and clean the ports and passages.

The headlight shell was busted so I took that off.  What a mess of wiring inside.  But all the wiring has the same coloring on both sides of the connectors.  So it was pretty simple getting it back together.  lights work, signals work, gages light up, starter works.

1st mod already done, a savage battery fits.   8-)
