Title: earthquake shook the place
Post by photojoe on 08/23/11 at 11:17:45

Earthquake in Va. hit us up here in NJ a bit. Standing in the kitchen of my 3rd floor apartment when the place starting swaying like a child's tree house in the wind. Grabbed my keys/wallet and down the stairs to find my neighbors gathering in the street. Scary, scary stuff.

at work about 60 miles southeast from the center. 5.9
the building was rocking pretty good.
I remember the 3.?? one about 8 years ago, fromt eh same general location, that one was barely noticable and much shorter.

Felt it here in Ohio too.  Amazing how far it traveled.  I used to live in Japan and it would happen from time to time.  Seemed to always happen while I was sitting at work, and my first thought was always "what the heck is wrong with my chair?" then "oh, it's an earthquake."  Same thing happened today.

Glad to see they're reporting no major damage or injuries.  Hope that's the case.

My husband felt it in downtown Charleston, WV.  I didn't feel it.  They thought someone was playing some kind of trick on them.

Got it here in Pittsburgh, PA too though it was light and short enough some people didn't even notice.

Friends in Washington DC were evacuated from work. They actually told me before I felt the quake here (was chatting online with them while it happened). Crazy how fast data can travel now.

I wonder what that would feel like (if anything) on a bike.

Apparently folks in my area felt it too. I didn't.

Any news from SavageDML or Prechermike?

:-/

Earthquakes are not uncommon here in Italy, I like on the 5th floor and things do get very shaky, you think you're on a ship all of a sudden...

Just let us know, OK ?

This of course will give fuel to the 2012 nuts.

so we felt the earthquake here too - my dogs jumped up and started barking and I was like "dang Toby is gaining too much weight to be shaking the floor like that..."

Here in NC some people felt it, some did not.
But it was noticable enough to me that I felt a small jolt in the floor and heard things knocking in the house (one was a bookcase with glass doors), and it really did upset the dogs.

I know to West Coasters this was not a big deal, but East coast earthquakes really do travel further and are rare enough that when they do happen they scare us!  :o

It's been crazy I was on site at the north Anna power station ( yes the nuclear plant they keep talking about )  working when it hit 10 miles away. And the aftershocks are nuts last night a 4.5 aftershock hit . All I can say is I don't like this !! Oh and there is nothing wrong here at the plant  !!!!!

keep those fuel rods cool.
those poor buggers in Japan are still struggling with their nuke reactors 6 months after the Tsunami hit.
we snowboard on the north island each xmas, so have been watching their incredibly slow progress since the disaster. still not considered stable.

The problem with East Coast earthquakes is that they are uncommon so our structures are not built to earthquake zone building codes. It doesn't take a huge earthquake to do damage here.

Very true house and general commercial building are not super earthquake built but trust me when I say that a nuke plant is sismic built !!!!
