I'm rebuilding a 95 Savage and turning it into a bobber. I have dirt bike handlebars that are 1 1/8" in the middle and 7/8" at the ends. My stock handlebars were 7/8" in the middle and 1" at the ends, so all of my controls and levers are set up for a 1".

I've read about dirt bikers using shims on their controls so that the controls "roll" around the handlebars when they wreck rather than break off. I was thinking about using these shims for the brake and clutch lever on my handlebars. That way, I don't have to buy a new hydraulic brake assembly, which is a bit more than I want to spend on my recycled bobber 8-)

Any suggestions, opinions, experiences?

Your stock bars weren't stock?... :-?...

Stock bars are 1" end to end...

I've seen them on eBay for BSA Norton's but wonder if they'd work on my bike as well.

Ive never heard of it, If I need shim stock, I go to a machine shop supply house or to a metals dealer. You may find help from a bearings dealer.

I've read about shims for 1" risers to fit 7/8" handlebars. Could the same be used for controls possibly?

Let me get this straight...

Our stock bars are 1".... the stock controls are 1", and so are the stock risers...

You currently have 7/8" risers, and 1" controls...

The bars you want to use will need a 1 1/8" riser and 7/8" controls (or shims to fit the 1" control)s...

Do you really like these bars that much?...
It seems to me much simpler and less expensive, to get bars that fit your bike, than to make your bike fit the bars...

Hm... the point still is, stock handlebar and risers are 1'. However - duct tape? Aluminium tape?

I already bought riser adapters to fit the 1 1/8" center of the handlebars and I had to drill the original mounts to fit the new bolts, not by much but enough that the original risers will no longer work. So, if I go back to the original bars, I have to buy new mounts, risers, and handlebars.

The only controls to be shimmed are the clutch lever/mirror and the brake lever/mirror.

Aluminum tape was mentioned to me before but that seems unsafe...

With those,.. you'll want 7/8" grips and throttle sleeve....

Not sure if a 7/8" sleeve will fit in the stock throttle housing...

Original throttle housing won't be on the bars. Moved the starter switch to a custom plate underneath the seat that hides/protects the electrical and helps funnel air to the new pod filter.

I've already got my eye on a set of grips that are 7/8" and come with a sleeve that has a single cable housing.

On the left side of the bars, I'm installing a 7/8" dirt bike switch housing.

The only things left are the clutch and the brake, which are more expensive to replace, which is why I was thinking about using the shims.
