The story:
My cam chain tensioner was extended out 0.718" so I had a friend modified my plunger by welding an extension on. Turns out my calculations on where to drill my second hole were off by about 1/16".  So when I went to reinstall the tensioner, the plunger was fully compressed into the housing, and it didn't just slide into place easily.  I had to squeeze the cam chain just a bit in order to get the screw to thread correctly.

The question: what happens if there is just a little too much tension on the chain?

Well,, thats gonna load the cam bearing surface pretty hard..

Dang, so I should probably cut off the piece that was welded on and have it re-done.  I don't think I have enough space to drill another hole in between the two I already have.

I'm thinking you can oval out the hole a little and add a washer.

Moto, I thought about that, but after weighing all the options I decided I am going to send it to Verslagen for the Verslavy mod. I really want the pin and slot anyway.

well...I gave the mod a try on my own, and almost got it.

You could have your buddy weld up the hole and try again.

As the cam chain sees a few thousand miles, the cam chain apparently stretches some.  I assume that some of the apparent loosening results from all stuff it drives, touches (and is guided by) gradually wearing.

Does the cam chain stretch some initially and then stop stretching, or does it gradually stretch and stretch and stretch?

A lot of things inside the motor change some over the first few thousand miles, and then settle in to their "worn in" dimensions for a really long time.

From some of you who testify that after the cam chain tensioner mod the cam chain and the stuff that touches it lasts for 50,000 miles, it makes me think the cam chain does NOT keep stretching forever.  Or,.. at least, after it initially wears in, it stretches much more slowly over time.

What's really going on here?

From the worn out "used chain" that was broken apart by Borg Warner's design engineer, the chain is only slightly worn on the pins (.002" of wear per junction) when we run completely out of the stock adjustment range.

Our chain can "last" more than twice as long as we have adjustment range, thus you can see the logic that everybody followed with the several extension methods that were tried to use up all the available wear life of the chain itself.

Wear to the guides is about half of what we see using up the existing adjustment range.  The guides crack, chip and break off little edge chunks but they do not wear down to the backing steel, ever ....

Rebending of the guides has been tried experimentally with several ongoing trials happening as we speak.

A chain system (guides and chain) that are worn to the point that it is hitting up against itself is shot.  

New guides and a new chain should come next.

Not very many chains have ever been worn to this point yet ....

Fact is, the riders are tending to get too old to ride all that much and the tests have never concluded.

I have two (2) spare super chains and I strongly think I'll never live long enough to use both of them.

I wondered where I got that   8-)

I wouldn't do this on an old rear guide, the plastic age cracks and I'd be concerned with it splitting off.  This has happened at least once before with the guide not being bent.  And it clogged up his oil pump.

So for someone with 2 or 3 motorcycles, who would ride his CS-1 maybe a few thousand miles a year, and is already 64,... a cam chain with the adjuster extension mod will probably last him forever, eh?
