Title: rear brakes - ave. life span?
Post by weracerc on 08/12/11 at 10:29:36

anyone want to throw their experince out there for me?...I am pulling the back wheel to put a new tire on - 11K miles on the bike and i'd bet the brakes (3rd owner)......anyone had to replace the brakes around this mile mark? or at what mile mark, or other measureable detection should i be looking to change the rear brakes?

I think under normal circumstances they last the lifetime of the bike. I have 16,000 miles on mine and they do not look even close to worn out. And I use the rear brake all the time in combination with the front.

Depends on how much you use them...  I have 26k on mine, and they're still good...
If you are an exclusive rear braker they'll probably go in 3 or 4k miles...

i use my rear brake fairly heavily. went through a period of 2k miles where i used it almost exclusively because my darn front brakes squealed like a stuck pig.

at 20k miles, still plenty of life in them.

there is a wear limit indicator that will give you a ballpark idea of how much shoe you have left, not that it is really all that accurate or trustworthy.

I had my first new tire put on at a shop. They ordered a set of brakes with the tire. I'll look at it when I replace the rear tire, but no more than I use it I expect them to last at least 20,000 miles. BTW, sold tires at a huge family run business for 14 years. Cars are the same way. You will, on average replace front pads 3 to 1 over rears. ihth :)

Ive got 20,000 on mine, & ive used a grinder to remove a lot of the surface area,, still got plenty of meat on them.
Id be shocked if you ever need to replace them/

If you do the "rotate the lever on the star" trick once, you'll wear out the engine (piston, rings, jug) before you need to replace the rear brake shoes ....

I have a spare set -- not expecting to use them any time soon mind you.

Unless you are an unbalanced brake user, I'll fall right in line with the other gurus here,... the rear brakes last a long time.  I started riding when I was 13.  I'm about five times that now, and I have never replaced any rear brakes (shoes OR pads).
