Title: Rear drum nreak still squeaks after maintenance
Post by oceantransistor on 08/11/11 at 22:49:46

I had a mechanic put new front rotors and new tires on the bike earlier this week.  He was suppose to clean the drums while he was at it.  First few miles the bike breaks were pretty quiet but now the rear breaks are begining to squeak again?  Can this be the case of a crappy cleaning job or is this usual on these breaks?  Any solutions?

Clean the rear drums?...
... basically,.. I'd blow the dust out with an air hose... he might scuff them with sandpaper if he was thorough...
Won't make a lot of difference...
I wouldn't say he ripped you off,... just not a lot to be done in there...
Humidity has a big effect on brake noise... are you in a wet spell?...

70% or more of your braking power is in the front...
;)...

The fix is the same as the front basically.
either get better brake material or keep them hot.
stock brakes squeak... kevlar won't squeak, or least not much.
I still have the stock rears and they only squeak on occasion.
I use them all the time, just real light, they get hot and drive off the moisture.

Mine squeak in the mornings when humidity is up for a couple of blocks, and then it pretty much goes away. I second the kevlar pads  as they don't squeal, are cheap and last MUCH longer than stock. I do have to squeeze a little harder than with stock pads, but that also seems to be easier to brake on loose ground, as there is less tendency to lock up and lay the bike down. I actually prefer it that way.

I tried cleaning and roughing up the shoes and drums once. I even beveled the leading and trailing edges. Didn't matter. They still squeeled like a stuck pig. I replaced the shoes with EBC and roughed the drums up again with emory cloth. No problems since. A quick squeek the 1st brake or 2, then good to go.

I think what Serowbot may mean is to dump the dust out and wipe the drum with a damp cloth. All the old guys except for me and Serow who used air to clean the drums have died from COPD. My rears sometimes squeak until I get up a little speed and brake hard just shy of locking up. They are good for a couple of rides after that. And I had an Oldsmobile that was perfect except it sounded like the rear brakes were worn out about once a year. I just got to where I'd yank'em and dump the dust out.
