Title: Blowing main fuse 06 s40
Post by jassi on 08/11/11 at 19:10:54

hi all
i just joined the forum after i recently got a 2006 S40.. i have been driving it for more than a month but a week or so ago when i would go to crank it, it would try and then stop making a clicking sound.. checked battery seemed bad.. the voltage would drop from 12 to 5 when i would crank.
So i got a new AGM type battery, installed it and cranked it.. Started great about three times and then blew fuse.. changed it , turned the key ON the lights lit up, hit the start and the fuse blew again..
not sure what happened..
Checked the resistance on the fuse to ground and found the side that has positive from battery was good.. but the other seemed to be shorted to ground..
If i turn the key to OFF, the resistance shows good but i turn the key to ON and it shows shorted..
I am confused what happened.. the only thing i did was changed battery and it started 3 times and then thats it..
I will appreciate any info that can help me.. i miss riding my bike :(

Wow, I'd say check the polarity, but I think one of the fuses would have blown instantly if it was backassedwards.

Hmm.. I'm interested!

Test the switch(starter button) it's self, name sure it's not shorting internally.

Starter relay, disconnect the starter , careful not to short out. Push the button check the fuse.

Next the starter solnoid(spell check). If you can bench test it, that would be best. While its disconnected, push the button check for volts at the starter also check the fuse.

The idea is to follow the current from the battery to the starter, testing junctions along the way. If you make it to the starter then it's bad.

Before giving up, follow all related wires for cuts, pinch, frayed, smashed area. And
Ensure items are grounded or isolated correctly. The rectifier does not get grounded.

I love this game! Welcome to the Site where are you located?

P.S. If it's cdi or rectifier your on your own, I haven't learned or looked into testing these.

I once had a problem blowing the main fuse. Slightly different situation. Mine was every time I hit the brakes, (while sitting on the seat), the fuse would blow. Turns out one of the wires to the brake light, which run under the seat, was shorting out against the frame. I taped up the spot on the wire and never blew another fuse.

all rite here is the update..totally confused me..
In an effort to troubleshoot..i disconnected the starter motor, took a wire from the starter relay and tried to start the starter motor and i did hear it turn.. so thought that is fine....

thought may be relay is problem so tried to short the output of the relay but man it sparks pretty good.. so i let go of the idea.

During this i had run out of fuses so i was using the decompression fuse as the main one.. thought well may be i need the second one to troubleshoot..
Got the fuses, plugged it in and donot know why gave it a start and well it did start no blown fuses..
tried again and again and agin like 10 time and each time started no issues ..

So now i am confused what changed..

sometime i think may be enngine was stuck and just needed a little extra juice to move.. and my connecting straight to motor did it..

But i am looking for answers
