Title: Accomplishments/goals/fears...
Post by babyhog on 08/11/11 at 08:36:36

Was thinking the other day how funny it was when I first started riding, how badly I hated the spots in the road when they patch potholes or sections of the road.  I'd dodge them like they were loaded with dynamite. lol  Now they don't bother me anymore.  I intentionally ride some of them to see how good a job the road crew did, how smooth did they get it.

Then there is a strange curve near my house.  Its one of those curves that you start into and it changes radius part way through and you have to adjust.  I hated it when I first started riding.  Now I'm riding it faster than cars can take it.

So I got to wondering.  What made you nervous while riding that you have since overcome?  What still makes you nervous that you haven't yet overcome?  Just curious what stories we can come up with.  Might be some common things that we thought we were alone in.

Grooved pavement; learned to relax at bars and just let it hunt.
Steel deck bridges - wet - 1100 feet above the surface - at night.  :o

then afraid of everything moving or stationary

now the unexpected pull out in front of me, including animals and other vehicles. I still dont ride at night or when it is wet.

I would have to say grooved pavement or wet steel deck bridges would tend to pucker me up as well - glad i dont have to worry about either one around here.

Nothing gets my attention any more than railroad tracks crossing the road at an angle in a turn, especially in the rain, Theres a curve in Tyler that does that & Ive been thru in the rain,, gotta work the bike thru so ya kill the curve & stand it up straight & cross, then lean on into the turn again.

I watched an old dude,( Yea, he was about my age now) sitting straight up on the seat, not accelerating or decelerating, on a dry road fall down. His rear tire rolled over the end of a Tar Snake. It was HOT in Odessa that day. The rear of the bike just went sideways & he crashed. He had a full fairing & a set of bags.. He was completely surprised that he fell & I dont blame him.. I pulled over in front of traffic & held them back, parked as far from h8m as I could & helped him get the bike up & explain to him what happened..
SO,, Just because youre not being an idiot doesnt mean youre not going down.. watch the ends of those tar snakes.

tall seats, now it's too far forward controls

rather be nervous at a stop when I'm going like 5mph  than nervous reaching for the rear brake or shifter going any number of speeds

goals: make buell more comfortable, somehow . . .

For me it was always railroad tracks and sand / gravel on pavement.

Tracks don't really bother me anymore, but I still worry about left-over sand and gravel at intersections...especially when leaning into a turn at the intersection.  They do a pretty good job of keeping the streets clean around here... but there is always that "unkown" in the back of my head.  ;D

Oh! ...and all the oil and fluid build up left by vehicles at intersections... especially went it's rained.  :-/

Yep, sand/gravel and general trust of the tires again.  I have gotten pretty good at spotting debris on the pavement and steering around it.  The last time I had a sudden loss of traction was with the much vaunted AVON WHOOP-DEE-FRIGGIN-DOO DISTANZIAS which I didn't realize take a long time to warm up.. dumped me on my butt.  ;D

Anyone on a cell phone and driveing a vehicle. Ive come to hate em passionately!
Wet grass, sand or gravel on a curve.
60 mph straight line winds from either side(last one slid me d@mn near 3 feet sideways).
Did i mention idiots on cell phones??
Meeting a highballing semi box trailer on a two lane road unexpectedly at a combined speed of 120-140.
Deep hidden potholes.
Ice or packed snow on the raod.
Oil or antifreeze slicks in the road.
Monsoon rains whilr rideing.

Dont think anything of grooved roads or train tracks.
Not especialy crazy about dillos or deer.
Morons that think because their in a car and your on a bike they have the right of way and own the whole road.
Morons that just like to mess with bikers because they hate bikes(ers).
Nimrods like my son in law that keep pestering me to let em take a test ride on my bike.(like i keep telling him, when you can buy it you can test ride it. Let me see the cash!)

While we're at it Harley snobs and Goldwing snobs annoy me.
Kids zipping in and out of traffic on a lil sccoter at 50 mph and no helmet. Their also about 15!
Only women on bikes i worry about are older spyder riders. Some of them gals are soccer moms minus the SUV! :D

Kind of a diff angle but I was nervous working on my bike. A little history....I just started riding last Oct. Picked it up to overcome a longtime fear/want to ride. Knew it would be a good hobby if I could learn to work on the bike. Since then, with the help of this and other sites, I have adjusted valves, replaced brakes, replaced forks (on my gz250), modded the carb, cateye tailight, moved regulator, and soon to add dyna muffler. This is the best hobby I could have found and the Savage makes it possible.   8-)

Accomplishments, getting back in the saddle and
riding after the crash and, 10 mths recovering.
Learning about the bike, doing the work myself. :)
Goals,
Do a sharp U-turn and not put the foot down..

Fears, gravel, sand,  people of all ages on cell phones,
little old ladies not stopping at stop signs..

Fears:
Someone turning in front of me from a side street or intersection, resulting in head on collision.
A pot hole or serious groove in the road that could cause an accident.
Sliding out on gravel in a corner.
Have a bad enough accident to leave myself paralyzed in some fashion.
A co-worker of mine had a serious accident and became paralyzed from the waist down. :/ It is tragic.

Dislikes:
Harley snobs. Custom chopper snobs. Ok, biker snobs in general. ( while I'm at it - snobby people in general )
Cagers who drive using cell phones or being distracted by other things.
Bikers who ride in shorts, flip-flops, tank top and maybe no helmet. ( this might include people here so, no offense. Just my perspective. )

Accomplishments:
Starting to do some real work and customizing on my bike myself.

Goals:
Ability to do carb work & valve work. Learn to weld and fabricate custom things out of steel. Some day, take an engine or even a full bike completely apart and put it back together myself, and have it still work.  ;D

Accomplishments - feeling way more comfortable (which might not be a good thing!) in traffic/highway riding, tearing down and resurrecting an old savage I bought and selling for a profit
Fears - I'm still scared of everything especially rolling around a turn to see a either a big rig or a big boulder in my line...  :o
Accidents in general...
Goals - having my wife quit squirming around when I have her on the back... :)

IF you see anything threatening in your line, Look at where you WANT to go.. do not look at the object that is scaring you, you WILL hit it. If you go into a corner too hot, dont look where your Think you may wind up, look up the road, where you want to go. Its NOT easy,, you have to Force your eyes to look where you want to go. Not where you dont want to go.

yeah I know that routine. I ski, bicycle, drive and generally take that priciple to heart. When I take my kids skiing in the trees I always tell them to look at the spaces between the trees not AT the trees!

Driveway is scary right now. It has just been graded and makes the Savage squirrely.  Major accomplishment:14 yr old daughter said she sees why we raised her to be nice, even to those who are not nice. She just started high school and is fitting in, because she dodges the drama.  Fears: For the first time in my life, I fear for my country. That's about it.  :)
