Title: Raisin' the Rear
Post by LarryC on 08/08/11 at 16:36:43

Any recommends for taller shocks, tried some Sporty shocks and the receiving hole on the shocks was too small......

Why to you want to raise the rear?

Push out the bushing and replace it with a thinner tubing.
Progressive sells a metric bushing but don't if it will fit yours.

But I think intruder shocks are a direct swap.  See serowbot.

RYCA offers a set at the new online store, 13 inches eye to eye.

I'm a fan of YSS shocks. You can get them with the correct eyelet size, a variety of lengths and, most importantly, with the correct spring rate for the weight of the bike and yourself.

Yup,... Intruders are 12" or so... very cushy... straight swap...
Just watch for swingarm/belt,chainguard clearances when you go that tall with any shocks... a tiny bit of trimming involved there...

I got mine for free, but you can find them for $20 or $30 on Ebay....

PS... if you're really heavy,... stick with Sportser shocks, they're stiffer... just replace the bushings to fit...

Define "Really Heavy"?
Over 200, over 250, over 300?
Whats the cutoff weight on intruder shocks to sportster?

When I went to Intruder shocks I weighed about 240. No problems other than the front end steers like it has a 16" wheel instead of a 19" wheel... Degrades the handling but my full rear fender doesn't drag on speed bumps anymore.

Helps to have an Intruder with a short owner in the stable. Lisa doesn't catch her boot on the pillion of her 800 anymore. AND her bike no longer has that embarrassing rear dirt bike fender to tire spacing.

All I did was correct a couple factory screw ups by swapping the shocks to the bikes they should have come on.

I would have guessed at about 200 lbs,... but I guess I'd have been wrong...
I'm 145 wringin' wet... :-?...

IIRC, Rowboat had to shorten & move his fender due to cracking, so he needed to make it longer, & being the Cheapskate ,, err,, resourceful kinda guy he is,, he went with the rubber.

Yup... ;D...

Got tired of the skunk stripe when I went through puddles...  :-?...

Been thinking of intruder shocks so i can run 2 up once in awhile easier.
Im 200 so sportster shocks sound like they might be the better option. Just dont want to make it log wagon stiff when im solo though. The girls like to take a ride once in awhile and i dont like the tires rubbing...lol.

And just how bad do intruder or sportster shocks degrade the handling?

Title: Re: Raisin' the Rear
Post by Serowbot on 08/10/11 at 16:17:26

They improve handling,...  for me anyway...
I'd have changed back if they didn't...

More consistent tire contact in the rear,.. raised height = slightly quicker steering angle (not noticeably),... more weight on front end,... a little more reserve in tank...
all good... ;)...

I wouldn't mind raising my rear a bit. So 12" Intruders are the cheapest way to go it sounds like. Or maybe 11.5. I haven't seen any for 30 bucks though.
