So leave tank in place, drain gas to can(via prime position hose), un fasten the problem child and discard, install 660, plug vaccum, replace gas, haul rear end!!!!!

Correct?

Nope, you can get it off if you have a screw driver that can turn the phillips screws while looking at it from the bottom.

Do drain all the gas out and do have an old bath towel handy to catch the remainder that will flow out when the old petcock comes off .....

Many of us do wait until we have the gas tank off while doing other routine maintenance like a valve adjustment .... but then we are old veteran Savagers who take care of everything on their bikes on a yearly schedule.

I just ran mine until I was down to reserve & laid it over on the right side on an old tire. Changed it without spilling any fuel at all in about 10 minutes.  ;D 8-)
