Title: Pondering my gas-cap,... recently...
Post by Serowbot on 08/07/11 at 17:52:31

... (biker equivalent to pondering your navel,.. I suppose)...  :-?...

... anyway,...
I hate when I stop for gas,.. having to find a place to put the cap, while I fuel up...
Is there a hinge-top cap adapter,...  (I should invent one!... Hmmm?!)...

... secondly,... I hate having to get my key out to un-lock it...
(...as if anyone would bother to steal 2 gallons of gas)...
...and if they did,... wouldn't they just take it from the fuel line, instead of siphoning?...  :-?...
Is there a replacement, or conversion to keyless?... (I should invent that one, too!... double-Hmmm?!)...

... a keyless, hinged-top, direct replacement, gas cap!...
Life would be so easy...  :-?...

Now I like that idea cause it is a pain sometimes to find someplace to put the cap while you fill up but if you're going to invent a hinged cap, make one that can be keyed too.

Having a lock would deter some of the bike haters from dumping sugar in your tank while you're inside having a cool one (not that I'd ever do that.)
;)

Takes some real premeditation,... and balls of steel... to walk by a bike with a cup of sugar, and stop to dump it in your tank...
(not gonna' say it never happens,... but,... Wow!  What are the odds?)... ;D...
...'sides,... that's what butt kickin's are for...

PS,... might be more effective to dump it in the oil anyway...
Never thought of that, huh?...
That'll be the vandals second option, when they see that your gas cap is locked...

(Ohhh!....... my next invention!,... the oil cap lock!).... ;D ;D ;D...

You're full of ideas and you could make a fortune on eBay selling them as long as you don't disclose your selling location as Land O'Lakes  ;D

Ponder how to stop mine from leaking. I've bought a new $75 gas cap. A while back I bought a thicker gasket from Bouletard. Its a long story but its a miracle I'm still here. The bike sat out in 90 degree sun right after I filled it up. When I fired it up and got in bumper to bumper traffic gas started spewing out of it like it was a high pressurised leak. It just wasnt my day to die or burn up.

Nope, just know of a certain seller who claims to be from the Land O' Lakes that keeps selling the information we give on this site for a profit on eBay  FlightSimShop (http://motors.shop.ebay.com/Motorcycle-Parts-/10063/i.html?Make=Suzuki&_trkparms=65%253A10%257C39%253A1&rt=nc&_catref=1&_dmpt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&_ipg=&_qfkw=1&_sc=1&_ssn=7532dragonfly&_sticky=1&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_sop=12&_sc=1)

You sound like you were lucky. I have personally tried a few different washers as gaskets, to no avail  :-/ I will keep looking/trying until I find something that works right, until then I guess I just won't put quite as much in.

I've had the bike up for sale, but I havent tried to sell it if it makes sense. If someone ever got burnt up on it I couldnt live with myself.

Just gotta' put a little less gas in it...  needs room to expand, and slush around...

Just like my belly... ;D...

It was one of those situations. Serenity and I were coming home from the Dragon Trip last year. It was 95 in the shade. We gassed our bikes up and were getting ready to leave and this lady pulls up with no brakes on her van asking for help. Being the nice guys we are  ::) we werent gonna leave her stranded. The whole time we were working on her van my gas tank was cooking in the sun. You know th rest of the story.

I have been pondering the same thing my self since I got my bike.  I have to use a screw driver to open my gas cap as the lock portion is gone.

I can tell you from experience a new cap is $75. My old cap was OK, I was just trying anything to keep from blowing myself up.

If I had to pay $75 for a gas cap,.. I'd blow up... :-?...

Sew,didnt mean to hijack your thread. You're a lot smarter than I am. Fix that gas cap. Brand new gascap and thicker gasket didnt do it. Not filling it to the top works but someday you might find yourself in a situation like I was. I'm surprised no one has ever been seriously injured with all the leaking Savages on the road. Fix it Sew!!!

Get a used cap from somebody who tore up the tank. Glue the key into the lock where it wont pull out but it will still turn to open the lock! Lol

I sit mine on my saddlebag while I fill up, so I cant help you there except to say get some saddlebags to hold it  ;)

If youve got a leaky cap, have a look at the area the rubber seats on. The tank may be causing it.

I taped off the hole and sanded mine with emery cloth to get rid of the rust around the rim. I used finer and finer wet sand paper (not wet) to get a nice polish on it. Periodically I put a very light cote of whit grease on it. Worked a charm and stopped the leak.

Glue a magnet to it and stick it to the tank while you fill up.

Thanks. I feel ike I'm riding a ticking time bomb. It would feel great to get that problem solved!

I always liked how the gas caps on the 70's Hondas (CB's, CL's, SL's etc.) worked with the hinge and catch release button.  :)  Not sure how to adapt to the Savage or for locking.  But don't ever remember it leaking on my CL350 though and never an issue on what to do with the cap while refueling.  ;)

I like that idea, Sunchasers.
The first time I fueled up, my
gas cap rolled off the seat. Kerplat,
onto the pavement. Left little indentations
in the lid. I was so mad >:(. My bike was brand
new and that was the first owie.. kim

That first "ding" is the most painful on a brand new new bike.  :(

Since the Savage isn't very big and not many places to place the cap where it will be secure, I just lay mine on top of the gas pump with the key in it while filling.  ;)   Not like I am gonna be able to ride off without putting the cap back on... ;D

Exactly what I do.

My '01 has 16,000 on it without a gas leak ever, except one time I way overfilled it. Then it just seeped a little from the key slot. I just lay my cap on top of the pump with the key inside as mentioned. But as for the magnet idea, I worked at a store that sold tires and appliances. I robbed the old microwaves of the round 'donut" magnets. I use one whenever I do mechanic work. Just hang it on the offending vehicle and "lay" your screws on it as you take it apart. The magnetron is the part inside about the size of a box of 25 shotgun shells. Very powerful. DO NOT rob your wife's microwave. (and unplug it first, if you do)  ;)
