Title: Choke
Post by rl153 on 08/06/11 at 14:21:59

Every once and a while I forget to push the choke in . What does it do if you ride 10 miles withe the choke 1/2 way out? Thanks.

You have ridden for several minutes with a mixture that is probably a little richer than normal.

No harm, no foul.

BTW, it is not a choke, actually.  It is a "mixture enrichment" device.
--  Chokes literally choke off the air (somewhat) upstream of the throttle, reducing the air available and lowering the pressure (increasing the "vacuum" so to speak) of everything downstream of the choke.  This literally sucks a lot more fuel into the mixture supplied by the carb.
-- A mixture enrichener works better in that it does not choke off the air, it just more accurately meters some more fuel into the mixture.

If you did this a LOT, you might be building up some carbon inside the combustion chamber.  It the old days of chokes, there was so much more fuel thrown into the motor that you could be washing some of the oil off the cylinder walls in addition to making a lot of black smoke, some of which was deposited inside the motor as carbon build up.

Why don't you consider the abandonment of this technique?

                                         ;)

I know that.  That's why I included a smiley.

BTW, I have NEVER done anything like that,.. departed with the choke on, sidestand down, helmet unstrapped, brief case not tied down, front wheel still chained, etc.

In a savage. It will wash down the cylinder walls and cause increased oil consumption until it wears back in.
