Title: fork braces
Post by royblueboy on 08/05/11 at 11:39:47

I'm considering fork braces. I have not read in the forum the difference in the ride or handling. any info would be appreciated, also the best ones to use and where to buy them. thanks

Only 2 makers as far as I know of, TKAT and Superbrace.

TKAT is machined billet and very think/industrial looking, inexpensive.

Superbrace is available through multiple retailers, either polished or chrome (not sure which), more expensive.

I don't have one, but those who do swear by them to tighten up the front end and make it more sure-footed.

I ponied up for the Superbrace, because it looks better. I was expecting some minor improvements in handling but I was pleasantly surprised.
Road snakes and paving grooves are smoothed out to the point of hardly being felt anymore. No more "loose" feeling in corners. Tracks through rough patches better. And it seems to me, and I don't know why, that it is less sensitive to side winds.
If I'd had known, I would have got one as soon as I bought the bike.

If I was building a bobber or rattin it out, Id go with the Tkat,

I bought a Tkat, but agree with what Arteacher said.  It does seem to steady the front end.  I can't remember what it was like without the brace, but I do remember I don't want to go back.

Another benefit I have found is that the brace dampens the squirrelly feeling in handling at low speed..say riding through a park or a subdivision.

I do not have pics of it installed, there may be some somewhere and I do not remeber the price.  I hardly remember what I did yesterday.

Here is a link to his page:

http://www.tkat.com/forkbrace.html

It says for yamaha, but he does make them for the savage.

That is about as much help as I usually am. :-?

I like the look of the tkat because it looks more like a piece of machinery than something you would find on a high-bucks chopper.

It seems to me (that means my opinion, eh?) that the "chunk-of-machinery" look of the tkat aesthetically is more in line with the functional look of a cafe racer.

I have had both braces the Super Brace cost more but it is also better. It is stronger by design.

I just ordered the Tkat.  90.00 includes shipping to domestic locations and 10 or so more for canada and international.  They don't take credit or paypal, I paid by personal check.  They just asked me to specify s40 or ls650 in the order and that was it.

90 bucks seems like a good deal actually, considering how much custom motorcycle parts are. I would def go with the Tkat if I get one.

Just curious.... what is the purpose of the "shields" on the Superbrace??

I don't have a fork brace (yet) but am strongly considering one. :)

The shiel;ds are meant to protect the fork tubes from sand & bug guts right where the fork seals sit./

How hard are they to install? Am reasonable with tools, but not a mechanic.

I bought TKAT's brace and I love it.  I didn't really notice any bad handling when I first got the bike except at highway speed it seemed a little unstable.  I read up on it and decided on TKAT's.  It was shipped very fast and it is a great piece, very professional.  The bike is solid on the highways and much more confident in the corners.

I have been thinking about a fork brace since a while now, but I can't get friends with the thought to get rid of the bug deflectors. We got a lot of bugs around here and I don't want the fork seals to get tore up by that.

If you clean your bike on a regular basis, then it won't be a problem. I've had my TKat for 4 years and I haven't had any problems (and I don't wash my bike very often).

You can get the defectors with the super brace, they do cost extra but I think worth it.

Title: Re: fork braces
Post by arteacher on 08/10/11 at 14:01:16

You could probably drill and tap the Kat brace to accept the Superbrace fork protectors as well.

Title: Re: fork braces
Post by mmosel on 08/10/11 at 15:30:35

I wonder if it's possible to keep the S40 fork protector with the Tkat.

I also wonder if it's possible to install traditional fork protectors without removing the forks. I guess you could cut them and install them that way, but that's probably not the right way.

Especially on night runs, which do often in summer because of the ridiculous heat in OK, whenever I stop for a smoke or gas I clean the fork tubes and the headlights at least. In some areas around lakes especially, you're getting  into what it feels like an machine gun assault. Millions of bugs hitting you and the bike without warning doing highway speeds. NICE  ;D
