Title: Raptor Petcock vs Stock petcock with sealed vac
Post by wesley on 08/05/11 at 07:07:16

I had a problem with my petcock due to the vac. But instead of getting the raptor I just sealed the vac and been just switching the fuel to PRIME when im riding and ON when im not.

whats the difference between the two? do i eventually have to get a raptor? its been running fine for months now.

thanks!

That's OK if you are not worried about having no reserve. ;)

I ran that way for a while but would forget what to run on in the spring after 5 months of not riding. Just switched to Raptor.

can someone tell me the difference?

on the raptor dont you still have to select it before and after you ride?

how about gas milage wise?

The Raptor is a standard ON/OFF/RESERVE valve.

If I remember right (correct me if I am wrong) the stock vac petcock does not have a true "OFF" setting.... only ON and PRIME  It relies on vacuum diaphram to "open" (when engine is running) or "close" the valve when the engine isn't running via the vacuum line to the carb.  The PRIME setting is a straight "ON" condition and bypasses the vacuum diaphram.

Like it was stated before, if you leave the stock petcock on PRIME, you do not have a "reserve" capacity... when you run out of gas you are out.  This would be like running a Raptor on "RESERVE" all the time.  Hope this helps.  :)

Yes, you should turn the gas ON or OFF on the Raptor.  If you leave it ON by mistake, you should be okay IF your carb float needle is working properly, but I wouldn't leave it on all the time.... why risk it? ;)  (Just an opinion from an "old school" rider)

I am not aware of any gas mileage affects either way between the Raptor or the stock petcock.

Went to the raptor a few weeks ago. I'm finally getting used to the routine of turning the gas off after shutting off the bike.

It's a simple and cheap mod (found a new one for $18+shipping).

I can remember when a vacuum controlled petcock was astonishingly new technology,..... this after a decade of using "the routine of turning the gas off after shutting off the bike."  It is quite doable.

Powersportsplus (now boats.net) has them for $17 plus $6 shipping.
