Title: Cleaning the carb
Post by Mattdw on 07/29/11 at 11:17:09

Just bought an '07 that has some carb issues. Won't idle without the choke fully pulled out.

So, I'm going to follow the carb cleaning thread in the tech section.
But, I was wondering if I can reuse the float bowl gasket?
This is basically a brand new bike with only 980 miles on it.

Any other things I should buy before digging into it?
I want to try to complete the whole operation in an afternoon and get'er back together.

Yup...

Be thorough,... take your time,... and you may not have to do it twice...;)...

Mines an '87--when I 1st rebuilt the carb at 12k, the gasket was just fine. Unless you're buying a rebuild kit anyway, I'd just reuse the old one. Float assembly should not need replacing either. A good cleaning and you should be all set. (Future mods not withstanding)

The gasket will be fine being reused, if it doesn't tear or break.
Mine wanted to stick about 1/2 way around, and to both top and bottom surfaces. But w/ a thin blade knife I gently popped it loose from 1 surface, and it was fine.

Well...it's all clean...and man was it a mess!
Anyone disagree that the guys who decided on those soft as butter screws should be shot?
Replaced them all with stainless hex heads...much happier now.
It's 105 degrees out today (literally), so I'm going to wait till after sundown to put it all back together...don't have a garage  :( ... I think it will be all better now ... can't wait to hear her come to life again...the right way :)

Well..........yes,......those screws appear to be equivelent to about a grade 3,......about the same as any other screws in most any other carb. If removed w/ an impact driver, or in my case, removed w/ solid mechanical pressure applied to the driver,......tho very tight, they come out just fine. I defy anyone to tell that mine have ever been removed. But I like Allen head screws too, even if not ss.
BTW, ss screws in general are by far not the strongest grade of metal. Maybe the allen head ones are a better grade, I don't know. One thing for certain, the allen head won't strip as easily,......providing  the driver is in decent shape
But the way,....what was it messed up w/,.....any pics ? I'm still looking for 1st hand hard core evidence of contamination caused by gasahol that we all hear/read about. :o
