If you will carry a camera and take pictures of yer crew and promise to plan to do it all over again next year ....

Then you will have a list ride worthy of stickydom !!!

Since Al didn't post his pics this year and nobody else took any you can easily outshine the Dragon boys and become the 2011 List Ride of the Year Award winner.

Okay, I just posted all the pictures I took all week long. In the 2001 tail thread.

I had just gone up that road Tuesday afternoon before Kim contacted me about the ride.  Unfortunately it was too cloudy to see the mountain, but here's a couple pics to whet y'all's appetite! :D

OK, the Greatest List Ride for 2011 contest is on.   Al has posted the summer Dragon pictures and them Dragon Boys is a plotting their fall ride already.

The bar has been set and the best ride for 2011 (most pictures and bestus most scenic course) war is on .... and so far the West Coasters are ahead on points as their pictures are already both prettier and more numerous.

My money is on the girls with the cameras .....

Quick question, do we have a time and place to meet up for everyone in Castle Rock? :-?

Oh, and I see we're all stickified now, woohoo! :D

Title: Re: 2011 Pacific North West Ride
Post by kimchris1 on 07/31/11 at 11:16:08

Yeah Oldfeller stickied us... :) Nice he used honey.. ;D ;D ;D

Ok John how long will it take you to make it to Castle Rock from
your end?

From Olympia to Castle Rock at least 2 hrs..
John isn't their a restraunt called 49ers or Peppers
there close to the exit? We can meet there before
heading up the mountain. Also gives us a chance to
refuel.

Hey DJ,, hubby says you can come Wed and stay overnight
here. This way you don't have as far of a ride on Thursday.
We extend the invite to you. Willl leave it up to you to accept.
Oh we have dogs and cats so if your allergic, bring your allergy
meds.. ;)
If you don't want to accept the offer, we can meet in Olympia
on Thursday.. I am 45 mins at least from Olympia.

I will give you my cell # before Thursday.
Once we get it figured out if Dj is coming all the way on Thursday,
as well as how long before we head out from this end, we can
then make a time to meet in Castle Rock..:) kim

OH and as far as the intoxicated little guy.. Cute way to
phrase Drunkien Dwarf, I called him.
He is unable to make this ride. Maybe the next one as
well as Prsavage..
Ok time to start etching the plans in stone guys.. :) kim

Title: Re: 2011 Pacific North West Ride
Post by John_D FSO on 07/31/11 at 15:52:17

Okey doke, here's some stats:

Should take me about 45 minutes to get there from my place near exit 9 on I-5.

Did a search on MapQuest, looks like there's about 6 restaurants right near exit 49 there: C&L Burger Bar, Papa Pete's Pizza, Subway, Burger King, Coffee Cabin, and El Compadre  Restaurant.  I remember going past the BK for sure, it's right on the north side of the road after you get off the freeway.

As far as gas, there's a couple stations (Texaco, Shell, etc) right near the freeway, and one that's a little cheaper about a mile or so up the road, if I remember correctly. :-/  For all the Savages (and me as well!) I definitely recommend topping off in Castle Rock, because it shows it as being around around 100 miles round trip.  It shows a couple stations in Kid Valley, part way up there, but can't remember if they're actually still open or not. :-?  If anyone thinks they'll need it, I've got a gallon gas can I can strap on, let me know if anyone thinks it's needed.

I just drove up st helens on a car trip with some friends who have never seen the volcano. Nice day! I ran in to snow(none on the roads) near the top. Not much but traces here and there. Be sure and bring a coat also! Castle rock is the last stop for gas! Everything else is closed, or was when we passed by. Are we meeting at Castle rock? And what time?

Ok, Dj and I are meeting in Olympia, 9:30 a.m..
Should be back on the road no later than 9:45..
Looking to be in Castle Rock about noon, possibly
few mins before, depending on traffic.
Gas up, lunch if you guys are up to it, then ride to the
top of the mountain.
We can stop here and there for pics..
Also Dj may want to stop at the observatory and see
some of the exhibits. Also a great place for a rest and
has bathroom facilities..
Weather again should be around 80 and sunshine...

Oldfella, get ready to rumble.... ;D ;D kim

Got the bike washed up.  I didn't forget what day it was, but may ride over to Portland Raceway tomorrow for the drag races.

Got a welcome addition to the bike in the mail today which will make Thursdays venture much sweeter: my Mustang seat w/backrest!http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Avatars/laughbounce.gif
After riding it around town, I don't know why I didn't do that a year ago. ::)  It's more comfy than my dang LaZboy now. ;D

Okey doke, picture time! :D  Let's see if I can get these in some kinda order here...

Met up down the road from my house with Stinger, to ride up to Castle Rock.
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/100_0185.jpg

Stopped for gas when we got there, and saw some other folks enjoying the good weather.
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/100_0186.jpg

Met up with Dj12midnit and Kimchris1 in Castle Rock.  Dj and his daughter, checking out the rides.  Stinger's in the foreground, followed by mine, with Kim's and Dj's in the background.

Kim, getting ready to ride! :D
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/100_0192.jpg

A different kinda chopper... :-?

Dj and the "Suzuki Princess" as Kim dubbed her. ;D
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/100_0195.jpg

Overlooking the Hoffstadt Creek bridge.  We're at the very edge of the blast zone now.  A lot of trees were replanted in the early '80's.
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/100_0196.jpg

A rough lookin' bunch! :o  Me, Kim, Dj, and Stinger (with the Princess in the background).
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/100_0200a.jpg

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/100_0211.jpg

Dj's borrowing some of Kim's pink yarn (some of which is now holding her saddlebag off of her muffler! :-/) to "pinkify" his bike.
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/100_0212.jpg

Kim's:

To be continued, again!

Part Three (the last of mine)

We decided these must be the mountain venting, since if it was just dust it would've been kicking up all over the place, not just a few isolated spots.  Is that active enough Oldfeller? ;D
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/DSCF0717.jpg
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/DSCF0729.jpg

Some wildlife, for extra bonus points! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/DSCF0727.jpg

A couple of Cheetos fans (check the lower left).
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/DSCF0733a.jpg

Trees blasted over when the mountain blew it's top.
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/DSCF0730.jpg
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/DSCF0731.jpg

Does a Spyder count as more wildlife? :-?
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Bike%20Pics/2011%20Ride%20Pics/DSCF0735.jpg

And finally, a quick video taken with my camera, left-handed while riding.  Check your volume, there's a lot of wind noise right at the start:

OMG.. We had the best time.. An abundance of
sunshine. The mountain clear and very visible
as John's pics show.. Alot of riding, picture taking,
b.s.ing..
It was a day I shall remember for the rest of my life.
You guys were great and I enjoyed every min of
today's adventure.
I arrived home at 9:45 p.m. and I am tired, yet
again very happy to have met you all and to have
been able to share this gorgeous day with all of you..

John, glad you got some great pics of the mountain
and the surroudings.
Ok so my pics will get posted some time tomorrow..

Oldfella, we have alot of bonus points. You best get
out your calculator.. lol
OH and yes we actually have a "suzuki princess."
Now top that one..  ;D ;D kim

Oh and the guys have asked me to get another ride
planned for us and others.. I may have to get a date
book.. ;) kim

Yep, abundant sunshine, as my face now shows! ;D  Only the upper half though, where the brim of my hat would normally cover.  And of course the raccoon eyes from my sunglasses.  Should've broken out my cap when we were standing around sight-seeing.  Feeling slightly crispy now. :-[
Can't wait to see what your pics look like! :)

Thanks John for fixing my saddlebag as well..
We stopped and as I was getting something
out of my saddlebag, discovered it had slipped
down onto the muffler.
Now we all know how hot the muffler gets,
well it almost melted all the way thru on
the bottom.
John was fast to the rescue.. He worked wonders
with the pink yarn.. :) kim

Don't remember how far Dj and Kim rode down to the meeting point, a couple hours I think? :-/  I had 40 miles, and Stinger had maybe another 15 or 20 more.
From the meeting point, it's about 53 miles each way, to the end of the road and back.  Of course it took about 4 hours I think, what with all the sightseeing and visiting! ;D

to names.
Again we picked the absoulute most beautiful day.
It was windy yet a warm day.
John sorry you got sunburned.. Hope your face
is feeling better now.

Today the sun never showed itself. Guess it showed
up too much yesterday..
Temps were 15 degrees cooler as well.
Ok the guys I am in the process of planning the next
ride.. Already have talked to a couple friends that ride
non Suzuki bikes to join us..
Thanks again for a memorable, fun, enjoyable day.. Hugs
to all of you and special ones to Ms. Suzuki Princess.. :)

Calculations complete ......

Most pictures taken, NW
Most cute scenes, most beautiful flowers, NW
Best/cutest girl pics, NW
Best volcano, NW

You win for best short calm scenic ride, hands down ...
You win for best first ride as you all made it there and back safely with no pavement/mountain side events and you had a blast doing it.

For the time span you wanted, August 1 through Oct 31 you look to be the Undisputed Winner so far.

=========================

As the "follower up" ride for the summer, the Dragon gets a few positive mentions as that ride has a slightly different character.

Most miles ridden (by a factor of 10+), Dragon
Most twisty & dangerous roads ridden, Dragon
Highest average trip speeds achieved, Dragon
Best decrease in crash/damage numbers, Dragon
Best decrease in bike related breakdowns/failures, Dragon
Best decrease in square inches of skin lost, Dragon
Most Hurleys, Beemers and Goldwings hunted down and taken, Dragon

.......... and finally

No scenic flower pics and other similar items, Dragon

Now, please don't take this the wrong way -- on the Dragon trip we ride more round trip miles on any given day jest to go get dinner than you folks did in total (including your miles to get there too).

We ride fast and hard and accept a level of risk that precludes any picture taking unless done with a handle bar or helmet cam.

We also have a long established rule at the Dragon Run about pictorial evidence, not collecting any that is.

So yep -- you win !!!

You will win next year too !!!

;D    ;D     ;D

Plans are in the works, Dj..
Thinking Hurricane Ridge. That is up above
Pt. Angeles, off Hwy 101..
Got to make sure I give John plenty of notice so
he can make it too.
Stinger should be able to make it too..
Hurricane Ridge offers up some great
twisties and views that are post card quality..:) kim

Yeah me too.. This marine air should move out sometime soon..
I will keep a check on the weather reports for that area as well.

We may able to get a 2 for 1 ride in.
Depending on how tired we all may be after going to the
top of Hurricane Ridge, we could do the 101 loop.. That
goes around Hood Canal and offers some great scenery
as well as some twisties.
I will be in touch.. :)kim

Yes it was a beautiful day and Kim did a good job of organizing the ride! A very sweet lady!  I liked how she parted the clouds on a very dreary looking morning to make it a great ride up to the mountain. Met some really cool people and look forward to riding with them again!  If the color pink plays a part in Skats recovery then Kim deserves a big hand cause she was the pinkest person I have ever seen! Skat should be running marathons in another couple of weeks if that is the case!  Kims coat was pink, her shoes were pink, her bike and helmet  had pink bunnies and rabbits all over it and most of her stuff including her pink rabbit that set on her handle bars were mostly tied on with pink yarn from the big ball she carried with her.

I happen to love the color pink.. It kind of shows
huh? lol...
Skat is also very fond of the color Pink..
Wait till you see my new helmet..  ;)
Can you guess what color it is?

Ok waiting on some info on Hurricane Ridge..
Also may try and do something next week or
weekend if weather looks good..
If not Hurricane Ridge, we can just do the 101 loop..
Ok will keep in contact with you guys..
Your all great and I look forward to riding with you
all again..OH and the Lil Princess must be there too..:) kim

Thanks! :) It's only about 80 miles round trip from my house, but the good scenery doesn't start until you get east of Camas, about 10 miles or so from my house. I took a different road back though; I'll have to get around to putting that one together next week maybe. That and taking the camera on a ride up through Cougar and around the mountain.

This past Sat, hubby and I went for about a 400 mile
round trip ride. We rode for about hr and 1/2 to
Pt. Townsend and took the ferry across to Whidbey Island.
There we left the Island and took the Old Chuckunut Hwy
to Bellingham, Wa. From there we took the freeway to
Lynden, Wa. That is near the Canadian Border. We left
the freeway and made our way to my Aunt's house for
my Uncles memeorial.
Going along the Old Chuckunut hwy is acutally the old
hwy that everyone used before the freeway was put thru.
It is loaded with twisties like I have not ridden before.
You Dragon guys can keep yours as I have now found
ours.. lol..
Dj, sorry for not being able to get in touch with you, this
was a fast one day trip.
We stayed for about 4hrs and visited
with family and time to head back. We wanted to make sure
we caught the ferry home as that meant we did not have to
take the superslab thru Seattle and Tacoma..
Hubby took some video and as soon as he gets it downloaded
I should be able to share it. We didn't get the video of the
actually best part yet it will show some of the area..
We left our house at 8 a.m. and got back home
at 9:45 p.m. Long day yet was beautiful weather.
80 degrees and sun all day till we were on our last let
home. Days like that, I hate to see end. So glad we
were able to do this trip on the bikes.. :) kim

Wow, that beats my ride last week. Went up through Cougar and around the east side of St. Helens, and back in to Spirit Lake, about 200 miles round trip, took 6 hours! :D  The last bit back to the lake is awesome! 25-35 mph, and tons of twisty roads! ;D

It's awesome, but if we went up from Cougar you Savages might need to bring a gas can, unless you went to Randle from there. It's almost 60 miles from Cougar to the lake, and another 35 from there to Randle.  I know I filled up in Battleground, and had to top off in Cougar on the way back because it was getting pretty low. :-/  It'd be a blast though! :D

Meet my friend Rita. She and her hubby live about an hr from me. Us
gals try to get together as often as we can for ride, lunch and more riding. Sometimes we allow the guys to join us.  ;)
Today was just us 2. We rode some main and mostly back roads around my area. We had hoped to see the Eagles where they congregate at low tide. However we missed them as it was high tide by the time we got there.  >:(
She rides an 09 Yamaha V-Star Deluxe. It is a very nice bike as well.. :) kim

Kim, our official East Coast entry is completed and it falls within the time span you had requested.

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1292661121/477

Roads ranked in order of decreasing severity ....

#1  Tail of the Dragon
#2  BigZuk's special nameless road
#3  Hwy 80
#4  Fontana Dam Road
#5  The Diamondback
#6  Old Hwy 74-A
#7  Last "unimproved" section of Blue Ridge Parkway (south loop) just before exiting into Maggie Valley

Trip mileage 1,232 miles start to finish  (Mon-Thurs)

:)

(PS  your little girl doesn't count on the "cute" part of the contest -- after all, you brought her with you, you didn't find her on the trip.   She's cute alright, but she's part of your riding/driving group, not a found item at all.

Title: Re: 2011 Pacific North West Ride
Post by kimchris1 on 09/24/11 at 08:25:46

Old Fella, I will say for "your area" the pics and ride
report were fantastic. I will never concede to you
that "your area" is better to ride in, than mine..
That would make me feel like a liar and that is
something I am not...
As for cuteness, I will concede that for a 4 legged
critter, Sassy tied with our pic of the Chipmunk.
As for 2 legged, well our lil Ms Suzuki Princess still
ranks as #1 and always will.
She is going to be quite a rider on her very own
bike in a few years.:)
We get the prize for the longest bridge.
Did you guys even ride over any bridges? Hmmm
seems were still 1 ahead of you...;) kim

Title: Re: 2011 Pacific North West Ride
Post by Oldfeller on 09/24/11 at 12:25:32

Heck, we rode over the second tallest bridge in the USA, the one that is built into the top of Fontana dam.

Actually, we also rode over literally hundreds of bridges as they are common as rivers and creeks in the NC Mountains.

This is a bridge ....

http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/DSCF00336.JPG

Bridges don't get you no brownie points, ya gotta think of something else.

As far as the Dragon goes, we rode ALL the bike roads that are well known on the East Coast and we ranked them according to difficulty.

The Dragon is the biker's way to get to Tennessee, so it would be sorta dumb not to ride it and instead to take the interstate instead ???

Nah,

You is grasping at straws now, we got chipmunks and squirrels but nobody would let me take their pictures (too kind hearted as they wuz all runned over by then).

Yup, your little girl was cute -- but she wasn't riding a bike, she was riding in a car --- so she cannot be counted in the cute stuff.   That's stacking your own deck so's to speak.

:-?

Let me switch the invitation around and see if you could come on even a one day ride with Zuk and MM and me .....

How are you at racing around hair pin turns on roads that are wet with cloud mist, and scattered with slick leaves and hickory nuts?

Title: Re: 2011 Pacific North West Ride
Post by kimchris1 on 09/24/11 at 13:57:15

Old feller, I stand corrected and even said so in
the Tail of the Dragon post.
Yes you rode over the dam and it is long, yet
again we didn't take pics of all the bridges we
crossed either.
As for our Lil Miss Suzuki Princess. She was on
a bike.  Where did you get she was in a car? she
rides on the back of her Dad's bike.
We get points for NOT running over any critters..
Besides had you posted pics of deceased critters, that
would not have counted as they would have been dead..
So you best keep trying to gain points somewhere else..
You guys did cover alot of ground, yet again you did it
in what, 4 days?
I would love to accept your invitation. I can and do ride in
wet conditions. Leaves and hair pin turns, yeah so what?
Is that the best you can come up with?
So your Mt. Mitchell was higher elevation. You get the points
for that. BTW, that is a nice pic of the 3 of you...:) kim
