Title: Carb issues -- All comments or suggestions welcome
Post by Mattdw on 07/28/11 at 21:33:29

Just picked up an '07 with 980 miles on it for a steal of only $2000 (IMO). Garage kept, original owner. Here's the kicker...had been sitting since August of last year so the battery was dead.
Took a long time, but I was able to jump start the bike. It was already almost out of gas, so I didn't drain it, but I added about 1/4 of a can of Seafoam and filled it up fresh. I was able to ride it home the 20 or so miles.
At idle, it will only stay running with the choke pulled fully out.
Push in the choke, bike dies.
Once you get past 35 mph or so it runs better when I push the choke in. So, it was kind of an interesting ride home with a lot of stop lights, but, I made it.
Anyway, I'm a little bit stumped and not sure where to start other than probably to pull the carb and just clean it all out.

One thing to note...while I was jump starting it, gas started pouring out of the carb vent tubes. To finally get it started, I disconnected the vacuum line, left the carb in the ON position and cranked it for a long time until finally it wasn't flooding any more. I replaced the vacuum line and now it idles, but only with the choke out, as I stated before.

I'm thinking maybe the carb float is sticking, but I didn't think that would have any effect on the choke position.

I'm sure many of you have run into this issue before...

Many Thanks!

Matt

Sounds like you have a clogged pilot jet,... and maybe you sucked some grit from the tank into the float needle seat (caused the flooding)...
I'd just pull the carb and clean the whole thing...

Agree with Serowbot.  Cleaning is in order... Seem to fix many carb related issue... Don't forget to clean the enrichment valve in th carb.

The joys of this ethanol crap fuel being forced on us. Sit 2 months clean carb.....among other bad things it does!!

I would drive it some more it takes time for Sea Foam to clean it.

Mine sat from Nov until March, I had added about 2oz of SeaFoam originally in that last tank of gas @ the beginning of Nov. Started right up, no problems.

I'm with Routy on the Ethanol issue, I have yet to see proof that it is causing the problems.

I almost felt bad taking it for that price...but that's what she wanted. She threw in two helmets as well, and it had saddlebags on it and a luggage rack. I didn't care if I got it running that night or not, I was gonna buy it either way!

Just goes to show...if the bike is not in running condition when sold it won't fetch nearly what it might be worth.

You SCORED on this one.  :o
