I have an 87 savage that wont go into 5th gear.... has anyone had the same problem? is there an inexpensive fix to this???? :-/

Well,an 87 has only a four speed transmission.
Suzuki didn't put 5th in until 95.

Thanks for some reason some dumb website stated it was a five speed.

Yeah,I have run into some mis-information as well,on this bike and others.
Guess ya just can't trust what ya read on the internet,huh? ;)

To be sure, check the side of the case for the shift pattern.

Not that the pulley covers aren't interchangable ;D

I have an 05 and I still can't seem to find 6th no matter how hard I try 8-)

My first savage was an 87. The 4 speed was kinda novel but I loved that bike.

My '87 wishes it had a 5th gear. 4th winds up pretty high anywhere over 50 mph. It's screaming at 65.

Either you need a tach or you're right.
I have a suspicion that some of the 87's got the smaller primary and larger clutch gear of the later year bikes. I have an '88 and it's got the same gears as the '96 and '02.

I got my '87 up to 95 more than once back in the day and I wasn't a light weight.

I never had any issues with top speed with my 1990 four speed. But then I ride pretty slow and sedate. I've looked at the drive ratios and all I can think is that the top gear should be a decent overdrive instead of what it is.
