Title: Installing new muffler
Post by built2last66 on 07/27/11 at 08:13:54

I just got a HD screamin eagle muffler, and I need to find an adapter that's 3 and 5/8 inches.. preferably chrome. Does anyone know where I'd even begin to look?

These things are pretty hard to get lined up to the exhaust but at least they mount to the frame easy :)

Probably need a different diameter at each end...
You can try local auto parts stores, but may end up having it fabbed at a muffler shop... it won't be chrome, but you can put a chrome cover over it...

I have a screamin eagle on mine too and I wrapped some kind of metal stripe around the pipe to fill the gap and a heavy duty HD clamp and it's been tight for a while now.

Where can I order the chrome cover? Do you think I could just take the exhaust and muffler to a muffler shop and have them look at it? Think this piece with cost much? Maybe I should just drill some holes in it...

Oh yeah, Serowbot what kind of muffler are you using and did you have any trouble with lining up the exhaust and muffler and making it fit with the heat guard by the rear brake lever?

Mine's a tab mount Harley shorty...  I hacked 90% of the stock muffler mount off, 'cause I know I don't ever want to go back to the stocker...

Ok, I think I'm down to 2 options here to get this to align right, once I find and adapter. The stock heat guard by the rear brake lever is gonna have to come off, and I'm either gonna exhaust tape the exhaust (they claim it gives ya more horsies) or just throw on a heat guard that is only mounted to the exhaust.

I really want to exhaust tape her, anyone know if I'll actually get more power benefits and not burn my leg? I do wear 12 eyelet boots... :-/

The HP difference from wrapping the header is so small that you will not notice it, but if that's what you want to do to feel like you are going faster, pony up  ;D

So it's basically like an extra horse leg.. do you know if it will keep me from being burned though?

Post by CalisOsin on 07/27/11 at 14:21:04

it will still get hot, so if you rest your leg on it for a while you'll have issues. But if you just tap it occasionally you won't get burned.

Thanks babyhog, I think that first link is gonna be helpful. The issue though is the heat guard by the foot rest holding in the header pipe too tight, I don't know if anyone had to modify the heat guards or not..

Ok so I finally got the muffler on..

But I the muffler seal didn't seal these lil slits and I have air coming out... any ideas on how to fix this or do I have to take the whole thing apart again and reseal it?

If the leak(s) is at the slit... I have a recommendation:  use an adapter without a slit.  This is how BCB muffler achieves a super tight fit.

Get an adopter with internal diamater that will barely accomodate the headerpipe+muffler connector gasket.  The adopter will need to be stretched where it meet the headerpipe+gasket or it will not work.   green in the picture is where the gasket will sit.

http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc390/optimusbhk/Motorcycle/mufflerconnectordesign.jpg

I had to use a mallet to pound the BCB pipe over the gastket (which is semi-soft).

Cheapcycle parts gasket (called muffler connector):

JB Weld over the slits?

Title: Re: Installing new muffler
Post by EJID on 07/29/11 at 23:29:02

Loosen the clamp w/ the slit problem and slide it back to cover the end of the slits. Hopefully that will still leave enough of the clamp putting pressure on the header to create a tight seal. Also, before clamping it all back together I would use some good hi-temp sealer on the joint then pound it together and let it cure overnight before firing it up, or you will blow the sealant back out.

Post by built2last66 on 07/30/11 at 05:30:56

TieFighter, I had this adapter custom made at the local muffler shop (I took in the muffler and the header pipe) but my dad insisted we had to make these giant slits to get a good clamp... which works in theory but now I gotta plug these slit holes because all of the sealant basically slide to the top of the header pipe when I slid the adapter on.

I'm thinking that I'm just gonna buy another HD clamp, slide the other clamp forward, slather it up with sealant, then throw on another HD clamp... then a 4" chrome heat guard will cover up the mess :D

I am not Jesse James :)

I don't think you can have too many heavy duty HD clamps on your muffler :D

Still kinda IRKS the hell outta me....back in time when I use to warn the newbies of the exhaust leak problems w/ the Harley/Dana.....and other after market mufflers,....and I got my a$$ jumped on by the oldtimer "Direct Fit" bunch here,.....about how I didn't know a dam thing about it because I had never done it. Since that time, nothing but horror stories, many of which ended up welding them on.

Its one thing to know what you're getting in to, then just having to deal w/ it,....much better than reading all about it being a direct fit...pc a cake job, only to find out the truth after it ends up being a "hack job"

Sorry builtolast,......I know this didn't help you, but I had to vent a little. You'll get it,...one way or another.

Mines no hack job, it's done right, but since it's my first time I didn't get the sealant set right, its a minor fix I'm just trying to work out to do it the best way. I can still ride her and she is pretty freakin loud, it just bothers me that there's a little air coming out of the tiny slits.

Title: Re: Installing new muffler
Post by built2last66 on 07/31/11 at 10:02:28

So, take her apart again, clean out the old sealant, reseal and throw on 2 clamps?  :D

Title: Re: Installing new muffler
Post by Serowbot on 07/31/11 at 10:15:57

Routy's famous,... it can't be done, so I won't even try rant... ;D...

Don't use any sealant... it'll just blow out....
One good clamp... get it in the right place, at the base of the slits, and it will seal... I use a tin can as a crush seal...
I've put these on a half dozen bikes now...
It's not a "direct fit"... but it's as easy an adaption mod as you can do...
Makes a great intro to the world of customizing...
Direct fit is for cookie cutter bikes... ;)...

Post by built2last66 on 07/31/11 at 10:22:32

Serowbot, so now I'm gonna have to clean all this sealant crap out?? I hope this stuffs easy to get out.. what if some of its in the muffler, because I did fire her up right after I got it assembled.. ruh rohs. >:(

But also, the slits are longer than the clamp, so air will still be blowing out of those.. I'm thinking another HD clamp will cover it completely..

It's raining here and I have no garage, you should come over with your drill help me mod some kitchen appliances.

Title: Re: Installing new muffler
Post by Serowbot on 07/31/11 at 10:58:07

Well,...  apparently you cut some serious slits in there... ;D...

I'd try using lead foil tape... from a hardware store...
You'll need to pry the squashed slits back apart to make room, then re-crush over tape...
I've never needed to myself... but, that's what I'd try...

I think a crushed can and another HD clamp with a lil sealant in the slits will work out.. my dad gets carried away with hacksaws... I don't know what his problem is...

Oh,.. sorry.   :-[

JB Weld is great stuff,.. some of the best epoxy you can get at Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.  It is, though, just epoxy with some metal powder in it.  It is not at all able to handle the high temperatures typical of the exhaust system forward of the muffler.  It would just discolor and flake off.

Try a test.  Go get a little washer, put some JB weld on it, and put it on the top surface of your exhaust pipe just forward of the muffler.  Let it cure overnight, then go for a 20 minute ride the next day.  Let us know what you find out.

Post by Howitzer on 08/01/11 at 20:55:53

Ah ok, I forgot that JB Weld is still epoxy.  I remember reading the back of a tube once, or somewhere, and there was a testimonial about some guy using it on a crack in his engine block.  I just equated JB Weld to epoxy-metal after that.

Getting my S40 and being on this forum is my main source of information about wrenching.  My parents never did much with their cars, so I'm glad to have the knowledge base here.

That stuff can resist the heat, but it gets too brittle -- it's not tough enough physically to endure the vibration in an exhaust system on a larger thumper.
