Title: 140/80 vs 140/90
Post by weracerc on 07/26/11 at 08:17:19

any clearance issues or other reasons not to go 140/90...I have a stock IRC 140/80 on the back now - need to replace it by the end of the summer. was planning to go with Kenda Challenger to match the front i changed last year - has served me well so i plan to stick with kenda.

I've always run the 140/80-15.  The 90 would be a little taller, but wouldn't necessarily scrape anything unless carrying a heavy load.

If you have saddlebag brackets you might have to check clearances with those bolts that attach them.

Personally I went with Shinko 712s 140/90-15 in the rear and had 1 bolt that I needed to swap for a button head bolt to avoid clearance issues.

You should be good to go  :)

I didn't have any clearance issues using a Metzler 140/90. I have since bobbed mine. The speedometer is more accurate on my bike with the 140/90

I use the Pirelli MT66 140/90 on mine. No clearance issues...BUT...If I had the saddlebag brackets I'd swap them out for button head bolts.

My speedo is more accurate...according to the doppler speed signs I go by....but last week a cop came up behind me (fast), pulled up next to me and gave me the "I'm watching you" sign with his fingers. At the light he rolled down his window and said "I need YOU to slow down". I told him I was going what my speedo said but he said "IT'S WRONG". I didn't argue... ;D

+1 on the 140/90.  Mine's a Dunlop.  No clearance issues, but then again I barely compress the shocks...   8-)

Oh, and I thought my speedo was slow (actual running faster than indicated) but I was gaging that against my husband's speedo.  Had never been able to check it against anything more reliable.  But I rode b!tch with him the other day and used the GPS on my phone and it seems his speedo is fast (running slower than indicated) so now I think mine is accurate!

The only reason why I stick with the 140/80 is that actually my speedo is pretty much dead on according to my GPS. I don't want it to show slower than i am with a 140/90.
This is actually kinda strange since most people report the speedo more accurate with a 140/90 compared to stock.
I don't know why in my case it's the opposite.
Also my buddy's C50 always shows 5mph more than my bike running side by side.

In my case, I think my speedo is more accurate than stock. I think the incident with the cop was just some chest pounding. I DID take off from the light maybe a wee bit faster than I should have... ::)

i've always used 140/90 w/ no issues - (dunno about speedo)

i wouldn't tease a cop, they have the power to give you a bad day!

Trust me, I wasn't teasing him. I have no idea where he came from but I can only guess as to why he was zeroing in on me. My wife said I should have stood up to him but I'd prefer to not get a proper beat down.
Denver, is not known for having cops with an empathetic nature.

I ran a 140/90 - 15 and had zero problems.  I am 200 lbs and she is 155 and not problems on bumps.

I was going to ask about the 140/90-15, but I see you started without me. I must first say I WAS WRONG about tire prices. It seems they have risen $35-50 each since last summer. Glad I got my Metzeler on the front last year. Found out today I don't want to pay up for a Metz rear. Going with a 66 Pirelli 140/90-15 tomorrow if they can fit me in. I don't have any issues ya'll have mentioned, plus Serowbot and others claim the speedometer is more closer nearly to the real actual speed.

my bike is getting inspected, so i can't verify exactly for you, but i've been running dunlop 404 140/90-15s for a few years now. no problems with me (200), my woman (105), and a crap ton of potholes (yeah pittsburgh!).

from memory, i do feel that the tire looks pretty wide. 6 inches doesn't seem out of the question.

I run the Pirelli's and they are wide. I'm light (145) but have ridden 2up before with no problems (275 total wt). You may have to switch to buttonhead bolts for the fender but I never did.
Exact measurement I don't have but maybe I'll check tonight and get back to you.

Same here! (Cept I'm about a stone heavier) I've used Kenda Challenger 140/90 for the last 2 rear tires - i have saddlebags with homemade brackets - never had an issue, didn't change any bolt heads. Wife is about 120 or so (guess we're both a stone heavier)  :D - she seldom rides, but when she has - had no clearance issues.

I keep my shocks dialed up to the firmest setting

140mm = 5.52 inches , i never actually measured the kenda, but it definitely "eyeballed" bigger when i first put it on despite the same nominal width.

Slap that puppy on and go for a ride!  ;D
