Title: That was weird.
Post by cafdad on 07/25/11 at 17:10:57

I stopped for gas yesterday with my wife she was running on reserve and thought I might as well fill up.  We both have 2009 S40's.  I filled it to slightly below bottom of the tank flue (not sure what the proper name is). She said she filled her's slightly higher.

Started my bike to head home and the gas started gushing from the gas cap.  I turned if off quickly, wiped the gas off the tank, waited a minute and started it up again. No gusher that time.

Not sure what could have happened.  We had both been riding only about 3 minutes before stopping for gas.  Yet she didn't have any problems and had filled it more.  Any ideas??

Gas is like Coke. It swells up some till it settles down. Not scientific, but true.

check your gas cap vents, maybe they're pluged.

Plugged vents and/or trapped air. I always start mine with it on the kickstand and let it run just a minute. Seems to keep it from boiling over, especialy when its been hot like it has been. THEN stand it up.

Sometimes what happens is the gas is cold in the ground and expands as it heats up in your tank. That's why you only fill it to the bottom of the neck. Do you have a California bike with the expansion chamber? Could be an issue there.

new here
this happens to me i thought it was just because all the gas is over to the left side of the tank when your on your kickstand and when you put it upright the gas splooshes over to the filler neck and up the vent, deffinately not fun either way

Gas contracts and expands very little with temperature,... something like .3%  (.003) per degree.  What is really happening with gas tanks and heat is that the metal gas tank expands and contracts, the airspace in the tank (vapors) expands and contracts a lot, and the other various pieces expand and contract.  That said, it is understandable that if you fill up your vehicle all the way, and then let everything heat up, you will probably get some overflow.

Gas is not carbonated like a soft drink.  It does not settle or get rid of its fizz.  It just expands and contracts a very little bit, while held in a mostly closed system that suffers from all kinds of thermal effects.

every guy here seems to call his bike a "her".... if she burps AND farts, no wonder she's single!  ;)
