Title: Odd location for a leak.
Post by greenmonster on 07/22/11 at 13:58:35

I have a leak coming from the rear bolt on my clutch. The bolt that holds the engine in place. Now, before people tell me that the leak is coming from farther up, let me state that I've wiped all around this spot and the only place I'm getting oil is right around the head of this bolt.

The only place I can think of that the oil could be coming from is if the seal for the two halves of the crank case is bad. And even that doesn't have any oil when I wipe it down with a clean cloth. So I'm thinking that it must be a bad seal on the inside of that bolt hole.

Since I'm not planning on splitting the crankcase any time soon (read: before I sell the bike.) does anyone see any issues if I put an o-ring on that bolt or did something even more drastic like... oh I don't know... dipped the bolt in RTV before seating it home again?

Yes, all the engine mount bolts will leak in this manner.
Usually, it's a sign that the bolt is loose.
Retorque to 50 ft-lbs.
at that torque, an o-ring ain't gonna make it.

Thanks! I checked, and it was not even close to 50. I put both it and the others to 50. I'll let you know if that fixes it.
