Title: Black smoke.
Post by lonerider65 on 07/20/11 at 13:14:18

My bobber project is going awesome. My bike had a bad exhaust leak when I got it and ran like crap. I have done the verslavy conversion and adjusted the valves ( although the top end still has some ticking) the thing pounds the ground like a big twin V ( doesnt sound stock by no means). The carb has been jetted and has a smaller nylon washer. I made the exhaust out of a old sportster drag pipe. Now the prob is when idling it puffs blacksmoke. It doesnt backfire and has plenty of power. It blows some when the throttle is twisted but thats to be expected. Turning the air fuel screw doesnt seem to have any effect. Its so rich that it will foul the plug after a while, but it doesnt backfire. What gives?

I'd say start with the jetting.

What jets are in there?

Is there a washer under the main jet?

There is a smaller nylon washer on the needle. No washer under the pilot. Also I forgot to say that it has an open air breather (cone). Im not sure of the jet size, I couldnt make out the numbers. I compared the jet to a 180 jet that I had and it was smaller.

Thanks for the info, I spotted right away that the vaccum from my petcock goes to the left side of my carb. Now that I know that it is all crossed up, do you guys know of vacuum routing diagram?

backfire (technically, to be correct, afterfire) is caused by being overly lean.
what happens is the engine misses, the gas vapors collect in the exhaust, when enough oxygen is drawn in, a spark from a non miss lights it and bang.

so being incredably rich, there's no miss fire, no oxygen, no bang... no joy.
