Title: Clutch cable?
Post by Angie on 07/18/11 at 06:01:43

Im not sure what the problem is, but when I pull in the clutch to shift (either up or down) there is a about a 3 sec delay before I hear the RPMs drop.  Then it does shift fine, but its weird.  I've played around with adjusting the clutch cable and it seems to help then pretty soon its doing it again.  More rarely, sometimes when Im going down the hwy (usually when getting up to speed) it feels like the power hesitates a bit and then it zooms off.  This is when the clutch isnt pulled in at all, but acts like its not releasing completely.  Please dont say its the tranny, I just got this friggin bike back on the road.   :-/

Are you saying the clutch may be slipping before it engages or in a high torque situation? If so:

1. Check that there is a little freeplay in the cable to allow full engagement.
2. Are you using an oil or an additive that causes the clutch to slip?
3. Is the cable lubricated so that it slides freely?
4. Is the clutch just worn out?

One part of your description sounds like the throttle is sticking, i.e. not "spring"ing back to zero when you release the twist-grip.  Is anything interfering with the throttle cable?

I havent changed the oil /lube so i cant see that it suddenly got an additive that is causting it to slip.  I dont think the clutch is worn out, because it does shift ok, its just there is a pause before the RPMs drop off.  Im gonna have to have the Ol Man play with my cable, the clutch cable that is, to see if maybe I just dont have it set right.

I have checked the throttle when the bike isnt running, and it seems to spring back to zero.  On my way home today I'll see if it has a quick response while in gear and moving.

Sounds more like a sticky throttle cable than a clutch problem...

Lube the throttle cable...

If not that,... it may be your needle slide sticking...

Humm, well a nice lube job is never a bad idea.  Maybe I'll see if my Ol man can help me out  ;D  I think you guys are right though, seems to be more of a throttle issue.

Hey Angie, try this method:

I need to do this again myself.

also, throttle will lag when the choke is active.
but in case your slide is sticking, a little seafoam in the tank can't hurt.
