Title: One hot butt ;)
Post by MrBrownTX on 07/13/11 at 18:09:59

Now I love a hot butt as much as the next guy but not when its mine and my seat is cooking it.

My bike was parked out in the direct Texas sun all day today until I went home around 4:00 PM when it was a nice 103 out side.  I had no idea how hot the seat could get!!!  I had a good 30 minute ride home and my butt was burning in serious pain the whole time.

TMI Warning:  I litterally have bright red burns on my rear tonight and it feels like a nasty sunburn!  Hurts like a son of a gun if I can wimp out and admit it.

It looks like I need a plan to avoid this happening again.  I am thinking I will bring a small white towel to toss over the seat and keep the black seat from heating up too much in the sun.  I might even ride home with that towel on the seat as a little insulation from the seat.

Any other ideas or experiences with this?

You might slide around with the towel under you.... :-[

How about a water bottle and wet it down?

How about parking in the shade?  ;D I think a white towel might help some but I wouldn't ride while sitting on it. I think it might slide too much.

They used to sell these half covers for about $10
all it was a rectangular nylon sheet big enough to go over the bars and sissy bar with straps to attach.

when I need one again, I'll make my own from a silver tarp.

Now I've got to wash my mind out with soap.  ;D If it's practical, get a cheapo pad of some sort that you can carry in to work and use it when you leave work.

I'm with Serowbot - I have a sheepskin cover and i wont ride without it Summer OR Winter...it insulates both from heat AND cold.

I looked but cannot find a good pic of my whole sheepskin - its real. Got it online from IKEA for $30. Threw it over the seat, and use the saddlebags to keep it in place. Take it off and wash it when it gets dirty.

You can see in this pic where it goes under the bags. Other people have used real sheepskin and clip it onto the seat, or you can order them online (but they cost alot more than the one I got)

I like the sheepskin, but don't wanna cover my Mustang.  Lucky for me, at work, a big tree shades my bike from about 3:00 until I leave, so its cooled down by then.  But I'm diggin Vers' idea.  I'm thinking a cute little triangle "tent" would be neat.  Bungee from the handlebars, back to the rear fender.  Hmmmm....  new project.  Cheap felt-backed tablecloth might make a good material.  Also would protect the seat from the quick pop-up rain showers that we get alot.

So thanks for telling us about your burned bum!   ;)

But as we say around here, we don't believe it without pics.   ;D

I use a half cover... it does a good job covering up the important parts like seats, gas tank, etc.  Good for hot sun or rain.  It rolls up really small and fits easily into a fork or sissy bar bag.   :D

Their seems to be a saying lately on some posts,
"if no pics, it didn't happen." Well I am one that
doesn't need to see the pics.
Now you know how hot the seat gets. Get a cover
of some type.
My suggestion, if you park it in the sun again with
our a couver, walk it to a shady area and let it sit
for awhile. kim

Riding on that hot seat is actually a really good way to contour the foam. But the cheap thin cover will wear out a lot faster.

Run over to Tandy Leather or order some material online. A piece of tan saddle leather won't get as hot and won't tear from the heat/cool cycling like vinyl does.

If it is going to be over 100 out, I take the truck. And leave the windows open, got so hot a week ago, the dash warped. Was supposed to be monsoon grade rains, I rolled up the windows, it never rained.

i got my 1/2 cover off ebay a year ago but i cant find it now on there - it says Cycle Shades JCcycleshade.com...but that goes nowhere...anyway my cover was around $10 and it keeps my seat cool - silver reflective thin material with stretch cords on 4 corners hooks to the turn signals.

I usually just carry a kitchen towel in my saddlebag, and tuck it under the seat in the front and sides to keep it from blowing away.  Keeps it cool in the sun, and since I work 6pm to 6am, I don't have to ride home with a damp seat from the dew in the mornings! :D
