Title: Fork Boots?
Post by SuperSavage on 07/11/11 at 12:15:07

Does anyone have forkboots on their bike? I love the retro look of 'em and am thinking of putting them on both of my bikes. Are there any advantages/disadvantages besides being BadA$$?

Several hav them on their savages. Advantages are your tubes are protected. Disadvantages...don't know. Use the search feature if you want to see savages with gaitors/boots

They protect your fork tubes from dust, dried bugs, and nicks from stones...  These are the things that ruin your fork seals...
... and... they look BadA$$!... ;D...

MSR Daystar "series 58" fork boots fit perfect...  I've had them for three or four years and they look as good as new...

disadvantage... you have to buy them,.. and put them on...

There are those who say fork boots hold moisture, which does bad things to the forks. For what it's worth, the Daystar boots have weep holes. I suppose they're mostly to let air in and out as the boots collapse and expand, but if you position a hole at the bottom back, moisture will drain, too.

Disadvantage: They look too darn BadA$$ and skew the balance of BadA$$ hopelessly toward the forktal region of your bike.

You think you can handle that kind of BadA$$?  :-?

I can't think of a single bad thing about them either.  The boots require a little trimming when combined with a fork brace, otherwise they're 100% BadA$$ in a bag.

Not sure I understand... do these look BadA$$??  ;)

Disadvantages? Don't buy Emgo ones, they will photo-degrade and fill the fork seal area with rubber dust.

Other disadvantages? Hard to clean. But since my bike gets rained on, never washed... ;)

Rancho shock boots fit the Savage/S40 fairly well, come in several colors & are pretty cheap. Available at O'Reilly auto parts or any where that carries Rancho shocks. 8-)

The Daystars have a little larger than average accordion folds and therefore fewer of them, making the cleaning process totally BadA$$.

When my DR650 gaiters start to crack, some Daystars are going on for sure.

These are the Daystars... about $!5.00 a pair...

Look just like my Emgo ones did. Where were they made, I don't want anymore Taiwanese parts if I can possibly avoid it.

Essential for traveling on "The Dirt Road"

How hard is the install? Looks like a pain and that's what keeps me from buying them.

Easy.  I'd consider changing the fork oil too.
Take wheel off. Fender off . Too cap off then loosen signal clamp. And pinch bolt. Slip it down. Then put on boot repeat for other side.

Come to think of it, I have to take wheel off to change tire when riding season is over, maybe I'll throw a pair while it's apart.

If you have the skill to pull the front wheel,... just add 20min. to drop each fork tube, one at a time, and you're there...
Easy as toast... ;)...

I have my trusty side mechanic Mr Clymer anyway. Is fork oil messy, will it pour off the tube?

To do fork boots,.. you don't have to deal with fork oil at all, ... only if you want to change it, while you've got them down...
You don't drop the sliders out,... just drop the hole tube down from the triple trees, and slide the boots on from the top...

Oh ok, yes, that makes more sense. Thank you.

Check out' Eazy on fork boot covers' they are slit down the back and attach with some kind of interlocking system doohickey. I wonder how durable they are...

However, the fork caps come off in order to slide the tubes out of the triple trees then back in. If you're a klutz, you might spill a bit of oil. But it's easy to clean up.

Checking the Eazy-Ons, what is the size in mm?

Truer than dirt.  The whole job should take no more than 1 to 2 hours.

My problem comes from a personality defect that will not allow me to leave well enough alone.  If I was going to the trouble of that kind of disassembly, I would be thinking things like:
-- Since I have the wheel off, I might as well clean it real well and rebalance it
-- Since I have half the labor done for a fork seal job, I might as well replace them too
-- Might as well scotch brite the rotor and the brake pads to get the glaze off
-- Hmmm, I wonder how the fork bearings are doing
-- so on and so forth

On a related subject, $70 to $90 seems like a lot for fork boots, when you can install real ones for 1/4 the bucks and a little more time.

I'll tackle that when riding season is over, I want to get the wheel powder coated while it's off anyway. Red Powder coat with white wall tire. In any case, I am proud to report that I have not taken my car this week at all :)
