Title: New Motor Runnin' Hot Post by ocdave on 07/06/11 at 15:24:37 I'm trying to get my replacement motor dialed in. I'm using my old carb but for some reason the motor seems to be running extremely lean. I'm running a dyna exhaust and a k&n cone filter setup. I want to say that the main jet is a 150 with the stock pilot and a white spacer mod. I've increased the idle and currently about 3 turns out on my fuel screw. The backfiring has been eliminated but still running hot. I've put in some new rotella 15w-40. I'm dumbfounded on why my old carb and exhaust setup is not compatible with this new motor. Should I make some further carb adjustments? Is it the main jet that needs to be increased? |

Title: Re: New Motor Runnin' Hot Post by Serowbot on 07/06/11 at 15:27:40 Are you just idling too long while testing?... No air-cooled motor will idle for very long without overheating... I'd say 5 minutes, then it needs airflow... |

I punched a hole in the bottom of mine. So far my JB Weld repair is holding, but I fear it may not be the end of my nightmare. I may be in the market for a parts motor, to make mine whole again. |

Aircooled engines get fairly hot, and cruising around the block is not really supplying massive airflow. I have a dyna performance (read: straight through) muffler and KN cone filter. Main is 150, pilot I think 52.5, needle one notch up (yes, my needle has notches). It feels really hot at traffic lights, but on the open road... no problem. Dare you to test it on the road and post what happens? |

You never said anything about it not running correctly, so we can only assume it is. It is impossible to have a clogged passage or jet, and still have it run correctly. What ambient temps are we talking ? Every air cooled engine on this planet is overheating at anything near or above 90 degrees. Hot idling ? Will it will run hotter idling ? I am not so sure. It will "appear" to run hotter while idling, but remember when idling there is not much fire, so it doesn't take much cooling. It will actually get a lot hotter above idle rpm standing still, than it ever will at a dead idle. I myself hate running an air cooled engine on a hot day, because you're right, it is overheating,......all the time. |

Never thought of that that way. My old 4cyl suzuki had this switch that killed the engine when oil got too hot. Also air cooled it was. And I remember it did that twice on traffic lights after rides in heavy city traffic. Before it would kick in, bike lost power and hesitate and miss beat... And why is this guy now an ex member??? |
