Title: How do you put the gas cap back together?
Post by Classic650 on 07/02/11 at 13:42:17

I can't figure out how everything lines up to make the lock disengage.  I have the springs & latches together, but once I screw the cover down, it doesn't line up properly.  Any help would be great.  Thank you

Maybe you should just say to H@!! with it and buy a new one so you are sure it is going to work properly.

Check this out "fix your gas cap leak" in the tech section.

I finally got it put together although it's not closing tightly.  I have to bring my bike to the shop & I'll have the mechanic straighten it then.

BTW, that link for fix the gas cap leak didn't get into the details of piecing it back together.

When you take something apart lay the parts out on a white cloth like an old tee shirt. If you need to, write it down or take a digital photo. Putting it back is usually opposite order of taking it apart. I take extra care when messing with something I don't know anything about.

I knew that, but at least there was a pic or two. ;)

Why did it jam up? Is it gonna do it again? Is taking it apart & putting it back together gonna fix it? Why even make it work with a key? Someone gonna steal all 1.5 gallons of gas? LOL,, Id get a cap that just goes on like a radiator cap if I could find one. Push & twist,, presto,, gas cap.. or gut the lock & use a small screwdriver.
I shimmed mine so it sealed better,, got tired of seein gas drizzle,,

I am not worried about someone stealing the gas, but I've had two gas tanks sugared in my life and I don't ever want to go through that again!

IMHO the two are not related.  Adults do stuff like that. The same kind of guy that will %iss in your helmet while it's locked to your bike.
