Title: Stainless header wrap...
Post by Serowbot on 07/01/11 at 10:38:57

... for anybody that's interested, this stuff looks pretty cool...
And not a bad price...

I'm thinking about trying it,... just where the header passes close to the engine... ... or,.. maybe the whole thing,.
Can't decide... :-?...

that's just personal opinion. I'd take the look of a wrapped header over a chrome header any day.

not sure why its called stainless header wrap. Looks to me like the titanium wrap that is commonly seen. I have it on my bike. Anyways, I can tell you that it works well and goes on easily from personal experience. I use mine for no other reason except to change look of bike. My whole bike is blacked out, including the EMGO muffler that I had ceramic coated black. I wrapped mine so that the chrome header wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb.

I keep my header shined so it sticks out like a thumbs up.

How many feet would estimate?...

I used the two inch wrap and it required around 15 feet. On ebay, they have a roll of 2" x 25' which should be plenty. Depends how tight you wrap it and how much overlap you use when you wrap. To be safe, get the 25' roll.

Nothing wrong with header wrap, just not my thing. Just looks to me like the bike has a broken arm. :D

These sentiments were expressed in another thread months ago, but my take on the wrapped header thing is:

Good news:
-- You are in vogue with a certain crowd  (opinion)
-- Reduces the tinny sound of thin headers (Not needed for S40/LS650.  The stock header weighs a ton because it is THREE layers of steel)
-- Hides the blue heat stains everpresent on chrome exhaust tubing
-- Keeps the exhaust gasses hotter so they are less viscous as they travel through the tubing and muffler.  This can give a HP and mileage increase to the tune of a % or so.  (.4 horsepower on an LS650)  This, by the way, was the original reason for wrapping exhaust headers,... performance.

Bad news:
-- looks tacky (opinion)
-- costs money
-- takes hours to install properly the first time you do it
-- requires maintenance,.. they loosen and get dirty
-- rusts the header sooner
-- weighs more
-- gets stained during oil changes   (edited)

I realize most folks who like header sweaters put them on their bikes because they like the way it looks.  Marvy.  If it makes you feel good, do it, I'm happy for you.  Just like I'm happy for the guys that had spinny wheels a few years ago, or the never-been-off-road SUVs that require a ladder to get into, or the '72 Impalas jacked up so they can fit huge flashy-chromy wheels with rubber coatings on the rims instead of tires.

Two items above are opinion.  I don't care about your opinion.  I don't care if you don't care about mine.  The rest is fact (rust, cost, etc.) so you'll have to live with it.  ;D   :D   ;)   :)

Please don't inject a tone of sarcasm into any of this.  I literally do mean that if a guy does something to his vehicle that delights him, that is all that matters,,..  I'm happy for him.  Really.

I agree with Bobs verbal gyrations on the matter, &, like he says, it dont matter to me,,

& then he says..

& Ill add to that

The fact that I walk away smirking means nothing,, honestly,,

I see cars around here that look like oversized toys from a Cracker Jack box,, I cant help but smirk,,

I like the look on some bikes, not on others...

What I'd really like to find, is some kind of a heat sock to slide over the pipe, about a foot long, just at the area that passes along the engine case...
It just bugs me that it's so close...

It just bugs me that it's so close...  & I agree with that, but I wonder if a wrap doesnt just carry that heat closer.. How much cooler is the outside of the wrap than the raw header? Id rather see a thin metal shield mounted so that it stands between header & engine, not mounted to the header.

Just adding my 2 cents, the previous owner of my bike painted the header with cheap high temp paint and it had some nasty scratches. Wrap is a good solution in my case.

Ditto.  My header looked like death when I got the bike, but it was mechanically sound, so I wrapped it.  I dig the look, but I was one of those weirdo's that knew the first rat-rod I saw was finished just the way it was, while my friends were asking the owner when it was getting into the paint booth.....

It does keep the heat down a bit against the leg too, so that's a plus.

Looks like I need to add another bad news item,.. the header sweater gets stained during oil changes.
