Title: Time for tires?
Post by arteacher on 06/27/11 at 10:07:32

Should I be looking for new tires? 3400 Miles.http://p1.bikepics.com/pics/2011%5C06%5C27%5Cbikepics-2231402-full.jpg

Yes, unfortunately.  The cracking is not a good sign.  If you ride with dry rotted tires, there's a risk the tire can blow.

For the at most $200 for new tires mounted, I'd say don't overthink it, just put new rubber on.  You'll wish you had if the tire does blow out and you crash the bike!

Agreed! Replace that rubber & you will feel better, plus the ride will be more sure-footed.

Here's what mine looked like when I replaced them.

Yes,... new tires...

If you don't ride a lot of miles per year,... say less than 2.000,... buy cheap tires.   Dunlops or Metzlers will be a waste... because thy'll dry out before you can wear them out...
Look at Shinko or Kenda, or Cheng Shin...  They're good tires, they just don't wear as long,..

+1 .. he says it well.

(But Metzelers (ME880) get MUCH better mileage than Dunlops (404) in my experience)
Metzler rear = 19,000 miles vs Dunlop read = 12,000 miles
and, yes, the Metzler cost more than the Dunlop.

Route 66 Pirelle  The highest rated tire for handling and ride at a reasonable price.

wow!!  I replaced both tires for my S-50 which has the same tire sizes as the S-40, dunlaps 404s, front and rear from motorcycle-superstore.com for $150 for both, then another $30 for both tubes, and mounted at an independent shop for $35 each, all and all just under $300, just replaced them cause they were old, not too much wear on them, a little cracking, but they were 2005 tires.

got a new tire for my buell on the way, bigger tires, 180 back, by itself it was $130 bucks, thankfully the front tire has a bit to go yet

ouch!  that price hurts a little.

for what it's worth, I used to run dunlops on my harley.  after about 20k miles i switched to metzler ME880's and never looked back.

the ME880's last longer, and they ride better -- the tread is all curved, no straight lines to catch grooves in roads!  my GF bought a savage, and when it's time for tires...  we'll switch to ME880s on it.

Don't forget we have to pay 13% tax on everything, including the installation, and $5.85 per tire for a disposal fee. Plus everything is more expensive up here.

I just put on a set of Route 66.
Decided to give them a try because of the reviews and lower cost.  (Rear $97 vs $147 for Metzler (at least this time around))

So far, not impressed with the handling.  It's OK, but nothing like the Metzler.
I don't hate 'em enough to pull them off (and I am way to cheap for that), but I really doubt I will be buying them again.  I'll fork over the extra bucks for the Metzler.  Besides, I want to see how long the Perelli's last.

Maybe I just need to get used to them.

Road for about 2 hrs on the Dunlops today. Much better handling and smother ride as well.

I have Pirelli's...I love 'em but I can only compare tham to the crappy IRC's that were on it.

Crappy IRCs ?
My '07 rear is slick at 6,000+ miles, and I don't see any checking.
Not exactly crappy in my book !
Front will go a long time yet.

My stock rear made 5,000, was cupped & had always felt greasy in a turn. Front made 8,000,, & was cupping.

Bought mine with 7K and the back IRC was bald...the front felt like I was riding over banana peels... :)

Never felt sure footed enough to scrape the pegs until I got a pair of Metzlers. Just sayin'.  8-)

I just got a Shinko front tire, mine was dry rotted to hell. Tire was $65, labor was $30, total with tax was $99.70, piece of mind about it not blowing PRICELESS.
