Title: bike died at WOT, won't start and puffing white sm
Post by Bobbert on 06/25/11 at 16:18:11

I need help diagnosing a problem. Read the breakdown below for details.

bike modifications:

K&N cone air filter
Harley free flowing pipe
Custom gas tank with on-off petcock and inline fuel filter

known problems:

Petcock leaks
Gas cap has poor seal
Old sooty spark plug
needs rejetting
Vacuum line left unplugged
have to ride with choke on second to last stop to get good idle

What happened on this ride:

Bike is stored outside.
This morning, starting was difficult and I had to rev up for 5 seconds to get it idling.
Took the bike onto a straight boulevard and was traveling at 3\4 throttle for 30-60 seconds when bike stalled.
A little white smoke came out of the carb vacuum tube as I pulled over.

Troubleshooting:

Starter turns over.
Plug sparks.
Fuel comes out of fuel line.
Replaced spark plug. No change.
WHITE SMOKE FROM EXHAUST PIPE when turning over.
Only ignites at WOT and makes very loud bangs.

Theories:
Water in the fuel.
Flooded engine.

We need the discipline committee for this one. It has to be some kind of crime.   ;D

Hopefully that smoke is not oil burning...

Does it feel like you have good compression?...
Had you just filled your tank?...

I'd drain the gas, including float bowl,... and put in fresh...

PS,.. That vacuum port on carb must be capped!... leaving it open will cause a giant intake air leak!!!......
The damage may have already been done,.. but cap it right away...

I filled up two days ago and made two very short slow rides.

I don't know if compression is good. Never experienced a loss of compression.

What JOG said,... also if you feel good puffs of air out the muffler when you crank it...

...Cap that vac port!... right away...
Fresh gas...
Try it again..

(Oh yeah,... Discipline committee (me) says,.. 6 lashes for not capping the vac port,... and three for not getting a Raptor,... and three more for not re-jetting,...)...
You came darn to to walking the plank...  Lucky Cap't Ol'Feller didn't catch you...

I thought the muffler was supposed to let out big puffs of air.  :P

I plead guilty to the charges of carburetor abuse and not guilty for failure to keep my petcock up to code on the ground that I have a paughco gas tank.

Ill try the roll test and flush out the gas

Big puffs means good compression...
Piston is pumpin'... ;)...

Put the bike in  5th... i can push it if I really lean into it.  >:(

Blown head gasket?

That's compression you're fighting...

Plug vac tap, and put fresh gas...

Blown head gasket?

If you hafta really lean into it, youve got a piston that doesnt have a hole in it.. thats a good thing.

Let the bike sit a few days and have the gas evaporate out the carb. She fired right up. I still gotta bring her home so we'll see if the problem is fixed.

[edit]I plugged the vac line with a 3/8" cap [/edit]
