Title: Lower shock mount bolt question
Post by Mattdw on 06/25/11 at 11:29:07

Hey all,

I feel a little silly asking this question, but here goes.
I bought some saddle bag supports that actually mount on the lower shock bolt under the nut.

If I just take the nut off the bolt, will it all just stay in place nicely while I put the saddlebag mount on then put the nut back on? Is it OK to take that nut off without the rear of the bike up on a lift or anything?

I was afraid when I take that nut off that there would be some tension released there.

Many Thanks!
Matt

Never heard of supports that fasten there. That means the supports will move with the swing arm, so you couldn't attach the bags to them and they will wear the bags sliding up and down with the swing arm movement. :-?
To answer your question: I would support the bike with the rear wheel off the ground, as 1/2 the weight of the bike is held by those bolts. If you have no alternative to supporting the bike, only do one at a time.

It doesn't make sense to me, either, unless you've ditched the shocks and replaced them with struts.

Anyway,  you're fine if you undo one side at a time. The other shock/strut will keep things supported.

+1... What they said...

Your bags aren't gonna' bolt to the bottom shock bolt...
That would be C-R-A-Z-Y !....
