Title: Anyone seen a modern bike w inverted clutch/ brake
Post by SoE on 06/23/11 at 17:09:09

I was near Dandridge, TN all week and got a hall pass from the better 1/2 to check out the Smoky Mtn Motorcycle Museum. Its new but somebody told me about it.

The owner was cool and let me take pics. I was looking for ideas  ;)
No idea how these pics will look posted, I shot, edited, ftp'd all from droid phone.

There was a Swiss bike from '49 that had crazy reversed/inverted clutch amd brake. I started thinking how wild would these look with Skeebo's fork mounted mirrors?

You can buy bikes with that set up from the factory. Chang Jiang, a Chinese knock off of a Russian knock off of a WW2 BMW. The Chinese levers are cheap pot metal. Look through back issues of The Horse, someone used American machined versions on his nose cone Shovelhead rigid. I have the issue packed up somewhere, I'll see if i can find it.

Fab Kevin (advertises in The Horse, or google him) can probably whip a set up for you. Wouldn't be cheap, but would be high quality (he likes stainless steel).

That's actually similar to what I have in mind for my next bike. Definitely low to the ground look. I want the front and rear tire same size (maybe even exactly the same) I'm thinking a little more sporty and not so old school, but I absolutely love that bike.

It would be much easier with a front brake that didn't require a master cylinder. But there was someYamaha -- from the '80s, I think -- that used a remote master cylinder mounted to the triple tree with a short cable to lever. There are probably other instances out there of similar setups.

Ya..bikes with rear disc brakes use a remote cylinder activated by linkage or cable.

If I understood the question your talking about bikes that had a left side brake and a right side shift, like many Brit and European bikes of the 1950-1960's.
It took a while for the industry to get on the same page, and a lot of people were hurt in the mean time. Think about the guy who grew up riding a Jap bike and then bought a Brit bike. When the emergency stop comes up and your foot goes down you don't want the brake lever to go "click!"

Ya...Not Good....
SoE was wondering about inverting the clutch/brake levers, what would you do with the front brake master cylinder?

Run a twin leading shoe drum brake hub from a 60s or 70s metric with the same axle size. Or ones that bronze flange bushings from Lowes/Home Depot fit into to make up the difference.

I have a GT750 wheel here at the house. 3 or 4 big washers per side and it fits Savage forks. Looks great, but brake levers that clear the stock starter button box are getting hard to find. HD stuff flat out doesn't fit, looks like crap if you go newer than late 1940s, and you'd need to retrofit the clutch side too. 1" Triumph stuff fits great, but all I can usually find is the clutch side.

I'm going to use it on the Honda cafe/track mutt bike.

What about  relocating the switches/housings, there are some cool pieces for cycles, cars, etc.

I'd rather use the nice (drum) wheel on an antique... This antique...

My stock Savage front disc set-up finally works correctly so until it goes T.U. again, I'll leave it be.

1963 Honda CL72, 250cc, originally a Scrambler (dual sport). Pipes are CB72 (street bike). Seat off an exercise machine.

Used to be a cafe-tracker (cafe seat and tailpiece with stock dirt bike bars). I swapped on a set of flat track bars, replica Brit perches and levers, replica Honda super bike grips/end caps.

Going to add small round HD spec mirrors (fit lever pin holes perfectly) and a scaled down XR750 flat tracker tail piece, but with the current seat (one piece rubber cover). Switching to Dunstall type mufflers.

Gold diamond tuck kneepad covers are staying, they came with the bike. Need to find some correct velocity stacks for it. Stock fenders and airbox, left side cover are worth their weight in gold, Holy Grail of Scrambler parts. Also need a Sporty chain guard to cut to fit, early Ironhead era, guess I could just fab something up instead.

Kick only, dual point ignition (stock), same size as the Savage. Oh, free and ran when I got it.
