Title: Bigger Gas Tank Available?
Post by plafferty2008 on 06/19/11 at 21:19:48

The gas tank on the Savage is too small for multi-day rides. Does anyone know if a larger tank is available?

People have put bigger tanks on. but nothing is made for it.

there's the vn750 but i think it's only 4 1/2 gals
then there's fat boy's anywhere from 5 to 9
and ol' police cruiser will have up to 9.

I could see taking two or even three of those and mounting them up lengthwise to replace the stock tank.

Here's what I have discovered:  My a$$ needs rest and refreshment about the time my stock tank needs fuel, based on experience of 500+ miles per day at times.

True, but then there are those (including myself) that make a lot of short hops and, wouldn't you know it, the one time you're really in a hurry, you need to get gas.

Yea but the guy in the picture looks like he wont find a gas station for the next 95 Miles.

I think this would be a great "just in case" mod. For those of us that have pulled the air box, put in the small tank and most would likely mistake it for an oil bag anyway. I am strongly considering this one.

For those that removed their air box, you could put a small one in that empty space there. ;) But i don't know if that would be mounted too low to get any gas out of it.

It would probably be too low but a small electric pump could be used to pump it into the main tank

You're right of course, I thought that was implied.  :)

Or you could just find a small stainless cylinder to to fit in the space  air box was and have a small funnel that attaches so all you have to do is pull over, pour it in, and find the nearest fill up station.

All of the Chinese Honda knock-off scooters I've worked on use a ..............vacuum operated fuel pump. And so did the Hyusong 650 I rejetted for my friend. Since the Hyusong is a copy of a Suzuki, you could do it with 'stock' parts. 8-)

Or their little 1/2 gallon tour tube - 4" x 11", pour directly into the main tank.  But I guess that would only get ya another 25 miles or so, unless you get more than one.   http://www.tourtank.com/TourTubes.html

We used to use exhaust pressure to pressurize the fuel tank on model aircraft. Food for thought there.

Which tank would require minimal amount of mod to fit the savage/s40?

Well, yes we did... on fast combats & rat racers.

When I was a TW200 guy, alot of guys on the forum used MSR fuel bottles mounted in tubes on the bikes. I'm not sure if there's a "handy" spot on the S40 to keep one, but they seemed to work good for dual sporters.

What if... you moved the battery and removed the air box, made up a tank that fit under the seat, and forced the gas up to the carb with exhaust pressure? It would not ruin the looks of the bike that way. You could get 3 or 4 or more gallons more that way.
