Title: How to clean burnt on crap off muffler?
Post by built2last66 on 06/18/11 at 12:39:22

Hi, I have some burnt on plastics and other materials on my deadly muffler weapon, which is stock, and before I go messing up the shine or denting/scraping it I was wondering if anyone had any special techniques? Thanks in advance.

Try oven cleaner,...
...or,...To remove areas of light rust and oxidization on chrome and other shiny bits all you need is some aluminum foil and soapy water.
Fold up the foil into a nice little square, dip it in the soapy water, and scrub away. It leaves absolutely no scratches or swirl marks.

Thanks, gonna try these out... I'm assuming the muffler should be at normal air temp when cleaning or should it be slightly warm?

Read the oven cleaner?
A brass brush wont mar chrome,, steel, OTOH,, will.

I tried the aluminum foil trick on my chrome and was less then impressed. Now mine just had a few light spots of rust and water spottage. Took off all the dirt, water spots and most, not all, of the tiny bits of rust. Shine seemed muted, less brilliant, duller. And dont use the trick on your aluminum engine case. Leaves lil swirls.

When I had a big splotch of road tar on mine, I took a penny too it and scraped away. Former owner said he tried "every type of chrome cleaner. couldn't get it off". 10 minutes with a penny and presto! No scratches either.

I'm gonna try a penny in a spot..

Ok the penny trick worked on the smaller stuff with no scratching and without leaving any marks. I still have a giant hunk of burnt motorcycle cover that's pretty thick and the penny won't even dent it!

I ended up getting the muffler REALLY hot then I was able to wipe off most of the gunk with a folded up old shirt.. anything left will be able to be scraped off with the penny :)

Glad to hear! Splotches on the muffler can really rack the nerves!

I actually had some motorcycle cover melter to my exhaust at one point as well, foolish me put the cover on too early at one point. Similar experience, penny certainly didn't do the job on it. I used a glass scraper, but that did result in a few minor scratches. Never though about heating it up first to wipe it off, good insight for future reference.  8-)

I've had good results with the foil/soapy water method, but followed up with a good chrome polish.  The foil left things a bit dull, but cleaned very well.  The polish shined everything right up!

Faultless Hot Iron Cleaner.  Look in the laundry section of your grocery store, by the Spray On Starch.
I always carry some of that and chunk of old terry cloth towel with me.

I must be lucky, my muffler is in great shape, nothing burnt on it at all....but the header stole a little piece of my palm the other day....that'll teach me to pull the oil fill cover after I had been running a little bit!

This is exactly what I'm going to need to finish touching up the thick hardened part that I had to get melty (like a taco bell burrito) again to wipe off. I think this may just work perfect, then wash and polish back to store bought shine. Thanks!

You are supposed to warm it up before changing the oil, just have to be extra careful  :o

If all else fails, read the manual. It is supposed to be warm before an oil change :)

Oh, I wasn't changing the oil, haven't gotten around to fixing the head cap leak (bought the part, just haven't had the time) so was just topping up the oil.  Usually I do it before I fire her up, but for some reason I had the urge to do it after.  Of course later on I pulled the header/muffler so I could put the new one on, and right now I'm sitting in the office with the 2 seperated, ready to put on the new one...Come on 5:00, hurry up and get here!
