Title: RYCA build finished
Post by BuckHMCC on 06/17/11 at 17:42:28

We are more or less finished with our Ryca build based on a 1996 Savage (LS650P).  There are adjustments and some cosmetics and minor fixes to address, but it has had its shake-down cruise.

Verdict?:  Faster, lighter, better seating position, sharper handling, and loud.

Nice looking machine.

There are definitely a few Ryca parts I wish were available individually.

Congrats on your accomplishment.  Lots of good work, there.  With two of these not too far from being put together (now that all the parts are here and the painting is mostly done) we are looking forward to the thrill of the first ride(s) as well.

It is amazing how much the character of the bike changes with the handlebars.  Yours will be much more comfortable for riding around town, but the "persona" of your bike is something completely different than the low-down, in your face, sleek, meant-for-business looks of Ryan's bike.

How about some more video!!??  I'd like to see video of the bike accelerating moderately hard,... taken by someone in a quiet car riding along beside you (windows down so the audio can get through).

Looks very good, you should be proud.  Care to tell me about that cute little wind screen?  Is that part of their kit or something you got separate??

That's a flyscreen, Piglet... ;)...

Great work!

Does the flyscreen actually DO anything or is it more or less for looks?

Awesome! I am waiting for my parts still.

x2 on a acceleration video so we can hear a little more of the exhaust note.

:)

The flyscreen helps some at higher speed. I put it on because it's in the cafe racer style. Many of the cafe racers I remember from the late Sixties had such flyscreens.

The handlebar is not strictly 'cafe racer'. To be so it should be clip-ons or clubmans. However, I set the bike up for a 5'3" rider (my daughter). The low-rise handlebar works for her, whereas the clip-ons would have been too much of a reach.

The bike does fit me (5'7"), but I don't believe it would work for someone much taller. A taller rider would likely want the clip-ons.

The flyscreen does help the handlebar 'flow' into the rest of the bike by hiding it somewhat.

The front fender is a requirement in Connecticut, as are the front turn signals (which serve as good running lights, too) and horn. I may remove the reflective black decals on the front fork and paint that flat black.
Also the flyscreen alignment is not perfect yet and the muffler may be better angled upwards more. I am also thinking of painting the seat hump flat black to match the front fender (which needs a better application of paint).

I've got a build blog that may be of interest to some of you. It's http://www.tailfinconsulting.com/ryca

I'm considering building these kits on contract for others. So if you're in CT, MA, or RI and want one of these bikes but don't want to build it yourself, please contact me. Perhaps we can work out an arrangement.

I will work on posting an acceleration or drive-by video soon.
