Title: Is this a good deal?
Post by sillydilly on 06/17/11 at 11:36:07

He wants $650 for it. Id have to drive a total of 6 hours to pick it up.

Claims its a project bike, engine rebuilt, whole thing is 80% done, doesnt run

I could really use a lot of parts, plus I could probably sell a lot of the electrical/carb/fancy stuff and make most my money back, then have a spare set of tins, engine, rims&tires, ltos extra to play around with for low cost.

what do you guys think

Who rebuilt the engine?

Looks like a pile of junk... but, it's a big one, if you like that kinda' thing...
...that engine don't look very clean...  I think the rebuild is BS...
... does he have a title for it?...:-?...

I'd give him $200 for it...

Id only want it as a parts bike, which are really hard to find for me!

If the engine is good, you could make your money back.

Unless you live somewhere besides the US (I've heard some high prices from the guys overseas) I agree with Serowbot. For $150 more you can probably get one barely running and not have to fool with someone else's mess. But I'm here and you're there. May be a deal for you.

going to play devils advocate here...
if it were capable of running... it would be.
the engines in, carb on, etc. etc.  I'd have it up and running in 2 days.

clue #2, only the head is clean.  only top end work, rebuilt no way.

betcha he timed it wrong and it won't start or even worse.

If it's an old style pre 90, must be able to at least turn the engine with the starter or forget it.

OK, putting on my good hat...
you want a parts bike, are the parts you want good enough to throw the rest is a trash can?

I dont know how deals fly in the states, but something like that for 650 IMO is a fair deal. I cant find anything junky around here like that, they are all runners for 2500+.

I sold my 1996 with 10,000 km for 3200 a few months ago

Besides the point, it turns out that he lives 6 hours away from me and I will most likely not be making the trip there to pick it up. shame, I coulda used some of those parts.

Have him meet ya 1/2 way? Mite be a chance he Did time it wrong,, but, a also noted above, odds of it actually Being rebuilt are low, IMO.

Ive asked the halfway trick, and he said he has enough interest in it that he wont have to travel, which is fair.

Then offer him 600,, to help you pay for gas & such for a long trip..

Title: Re: Is this a good deal?
Post by sillydilly on 06/18/11 at 07:59:12

Ive already got him down from 800....

Well,, he'll either say Okay,, Ill go down 50 more, come get it, or he wont,, as is, youre about to pass on it & ya want it, right? Mite as well take a shot,,
Or , is that just too much of a drive? It would be for me.. If I drove 6 hours, Id have to shut down for the nite,, no way Id get back home.

That kind of things scares me.  If I had that pile of parts in front of me, it would take weeks and weeks for me to just get through the pile, inventory it, clean it up, assess what I really have, pissing and moaning the whole time about what I had gotten myself into.  At least part of that issue, though, is due to my own personality defects.

On the other hand, were you to inventory the pile, and go to cheapcycleparts to find out what it would cost to replace it all, I'll bet it would be at least a few thou.

I also share verslagen's apprehension with the state of the motor.  It is a good thing these thumpers are easy to work on.

Here's a tactic you might consider to get him down some more in price.  Have a couple of your buddies call him up over the next few days, chat about buying the thing, and have one of them offer him $400, and one offer him $300.  After all, it is not a vehicle,... it is a collection of parts.  When you offer him $450 a day later, he might take you up on it.  Normally I wouldn't suggest something sneaky like this, but I have the faint suspicion he is not fully disclosing the condition of the bike.

I can see your point, though, in your original message about how you at least would end up with a lot of spares, and that you might be able (over some time period) to get some of your money back by selling off some of the costly bits.

Good luck!   :P

I agree with Gyro,  Im not so sure hes being entirely forthcoming. & YOu dont need to be feelin sorry for the guy, whatever losses hes takin are his own fault, get that stuff as cheap as ya can.

he seems pretty firm and uptight, and figures if I dont make a move by monday hes got another guy waiting.

No big deal, woulda loved to have it, but to drive 11 hours for a bike like that isnt something Im into.

First off, that price is ludicrous. I paid $600 for my '87 Savage and aside from spending a week tracking down its bogging problem, is a nice beautiful bike. Go to the Need Help!!! thread and you'll see a pic of it. I'm with the other guy, I'd give 2, maybe $300 for it tops.

I deal with craigs all the time. It's kinda become like a part time job for me. The guys that won't negotiate or talk about all the other "potential" buyers are usually full of it. They are cheap and want to hold out for the price he wants. Honestly, he probably has around $600 in it and is looking to get some money back. But, in those situations I walk away and 7 out of 10 times I get an email or phone call 4 days later and its the same guy now willing to negotiate because his pretend "potential" buyers never came.

11 hours? Thats one of those deals where you could see both sides. You could say, "I gotta drive all this way man, cut me some slack and lower the price, help me out!" but on the other hand he could say, "I'm selling the bike, it's not my fault/problem you live 11 hours away." And on both ends you'd be right.

I personally HATE when someone calls me about an item for sale and then ask me to drive an hour away to meet them or deliver. On a couple occasions people have come by, bought an item and maybe it didn't fit like they thought. In these situations I've been more than happy to "deliver" it if they covered my gas. I have 2 kids, full time job and a full time band, plus the only time I get alone I spend on the guitar, computer or bike. My time is very important to me, wasting 5 hours on what should be a 20min deal on my sunday really gets under my skin.

Magic, I don't believe he is in the United States. I live in the South and the prices people pay in other regions seem outrageous. I have noticed that our "foreign" friends have a hard time even  locating parts, so it is only natural that they have to pay more and put up with more crap just to get to ride. He sold a '96 for $3200.  Just sayin'..

oh darn... I just saw a '98 with 10k on it for $1800 lol

Yeah that makes sense being in another country. Funny how it works that way.
