Title: Clutch damage...?
Post by mcentric on 06/16/11 at 14:24:51

I noticed this damage on the clutch housing the first time I took the cover off after I bought the bike. I didn't think too much about it as it appears to be only cosmetic.

Anyone familiar with what might have caused this? I haven't had the clutch disassembled yet, so for all I know it was the just the previous owner who was a little "heavy handed".

Looks ookie!... Maybe the cam adjuster came loose and got caught in there...
... or could somebody have been banging on it to get it off?...
Looks like it still turns freely though, I think it's just cosmetic...

Runs okay?...

Thanks for the reply Serowbot,

I was thinking about the cam chain tensioner too, but the damage is so uniform all the way around that I have doubts. My bet is on an excessively brutal clutch removal at some point, but it would be nice to be sure.

I can't really say it runs good as I have serious cam/cam journal/rocker wear issues, but I am well on my way to rectifying that (see thread "new old savage")

Looks like hammer marks.  I bet Oldfeller will come up with a cause.

that looks way to uniform to have happened on install/removal (unless maybe they were using a chain wrench?) I'd say something bad happened in there at some point.

I used to keep a torn apart engine on my computer desk, but now that it is back together again I miss it for diagnostic work -- no clue to this one.

I think he was adjusting the valves.   :-?

I put my money on the cam chain adjuster. It came loose and the clutch basket spinning and the adjuster body dangling and bouncing around all over the the back of it.
