Title: No idle
Post by bluedad on 06/09/11 at 18:05:58

96 Savage I've had it almost a month and it has been running great.
That is, until this evening.   I decided to go visit my dad, a straight shot 25 mile trip no stops, and  everything was fine.  That is until I slowed down to turn into his drive and  the bike died.  It started right up and I pulled on in.  Leaving, it wouldn't idle, but when I got it on the road it seemed to run fine.  although when I let off the throttle, it seemed to backfire a lot more than usual.  And when I got it home parked in the garage it just died..without a backfire.
No idle and excessive backfire..one more thing to ponder over.

Rule out a petcock problem before checking anything else...

... odds are better than 50/50 that is the problem... ;)...

Thanks for the suggestion.  I get home early today and will have time to work on it.

I did the two tests.  No gas coming from the petcock hose (although tbh, I didn't suck on it.  It seems to be too short to pull out far enough for me to reach it.)
Blocked off the two hoses and there was no improvement.
Now that it is day time and I can make noise (last night the wife was in bed, and the garage is on the same side of the house) it turns out that the bike does idle, although a bit rough.  However, if I give it a bit of throttle it'll sputter and die.
It'll idle and I can give it more throttle with the choke all the way open,
if that lends a clue.

You might have gotten a small particle of gunk in the pilot jet,... or you have a sticky needle slide...
I think you'll have to go into the carb, and clean...  You can try some Seafoam in the tank, if you like... sometimes it said to work...
You might try a new spark plug too...

I may try the Seafoam and a new spark plug first.  It seems like pulling the carb and cleaning is like a rite of ownership. ;D
thanks for your seggestions, Serowbot

Yer' welcome...
Funny,.. I usually have a bunch of differing opinions following mine...
...either I nailed it... or... they're absolutely sick of me...

...but,...either way...
Good luck...  ;)...
