Title: Availability and Market price for LS650 engine
Post by ocdave on 06/08/11 at 17:08:54

I think I'm going to end up replacing the motor on my '95 project Savage. I have a few questions. Based on your guys experience how available are decent LS650 engines. I see a few high mileage motors currently on Ebay. I missed out on a 2005 motor a few weeks ago that claimed to have only about 2.5K it went for the starting bid price of $399.

There is currently a 1998 motor with a claimed mileage of 12k on Ebay right now with a best offer listing. What do you guys think would be a fair price offer for this motor. They have a video of it running.

Should I stay away from a motor with this amount of miles? Should I be patient and wait? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

14k miles, not bad, I see they include everything so $800 not bad.
but when you throw in another $200 for shipping, might as well find another bike.  $200 for shipping is about double what it should be.

at 20 to 25k you'll need either a verslavy or a new cam chain
you should expect about 40 to 50k miles out of an engine and maybe up to 80k before you need a piston and rings.

That's not the engine sound in the video, it's the noise the mechanic's gum chewing makes.

Is this a normal engine sound from a stock savage? Mine ran off a dyna exhaust.

Do you have a local motorcycle wrecker or salvage yard?  You might be able to find something there.  I've noticed that a lot of bikes marketed as "beginner bikes" have a pretty high ratio at my local salvage yard.  Honda Rebels, Savages / S40's, Lightweight Shadows and Vulcans.  Talking with the owner, he said some folks get rid of 'em as soon as they drop 'em.  The worse the drop, the cheaper the price.  Worth a look, anyways.....

Noob question: What distinguishes an "engine" from the piston and rings in this context? (Valves, cams, chains, etc?)
