Title: Newbie hello and quick questions
Post by Scott2.0 on 06/08/11 at 13:30:47

Hi everyone!  I just got my first bike yesterday, an '04 Savage with 900 miles on it.  The first thing I did was take the windshield and saddle bags off and next to go is the sissy bar.  I've been trying to do my best to search the forum and get all the info I can before posting but I have a couple quick questions.

First, I need to make this bike louder.  Mostly for safety but cool factor doesn't hurt.  I'm not sure whether I want the Emgo 17" reverse cone or one of the Harley conversions from ebay.  I need to do whatever's easier to install and requires less/no carb work since I'm not the most handy.  Any advice?

Secondly, from reading the forum it seems our bikes run too lean from the factory for emissions reasons.  Do I need to rejet it to make it run richer or is there some sort of adjustment screw I need to mess with?

I know these are green horn questions but I look forward to becoming a part of the community and will hopefully be able to contribute more in the future.  Any other easy mods that a newbie should do are also welcome.  Thanks in advance!

Scott

Here's a crappy pic.  I'll try to get some better ones soon

Scott, welcome. Some change jetting for lean condition, but you can start with the carb spacer. Go to the technical section and get details on lotsa mods. Remember this: Do only one thing at a time. If you do a lot and it runs like crap, you won't know what to go back to and may have to get rid of otherwise safe mods. Above all, be patient, grasshopper. Couldn't see your pics. May just be me. Anybody else that can't pull them up?

Thanks, good call on doing one thing at a time.  Can you see the pic in the reply to myself?  It wouldn't let me post an outside hosted image in my first post to the forum so I had to send it as a reply (my second post).

1st the HD take offs are a dime a dozen at HD dealers.

take a look in the tech section (link below) for the dyna part numbers.

Walk into a dealer and tell 'em your dad needs a muff for his 60's triumph project bike and this is what's recommended...

rejet... probably needed after new muff.  Check the tect section for the thread on rejetting.  learn to read your sparkplug.

Cool, that's what I'll do.  Thanks.  The Dyna muffler is a direct bolt on using the side rails, right?

Pic's fixed too BTW.

I did that and the guy said if your dad needs this he's gotta be at least 96 bring him in and I'll give it to him for free.

Anyone know where I can get a 96 year old for an hour or 2?   ;D

After riding for a few days without it, I'm rethinking it and think I'll put it back on.  If not, I'll let you know.

The Emgo 17 inch reverse cone is LOUD!  The only baffle is a perforated plate.  The glass packing that it comes with is pitiful.  You can pull it apart and repack it tightly with new packing.  It takes the higher-frequency bark out of it.  It has a lot nicer tone when repacked.  More thud, less blatt.  It is still LOUD.  You will surely need to re-jet.  My Emgo muffler and head pipe started discoloring immediately.

I ended up going with a dyna muffler.  Nicer sound than stock, but not obnoxious.  Both mufflers bolt up pretty easily.  I just used one mounting bolt in the muffler mounting bracket.

Welcome......Scott, before you get too loud, check with the locals as many states have noise regs on motorcycles..you really don't need the hassles. ;)

This is simple
This is a little louder w/ 3/16 holes, (bigger louder)
It sounds good
No rejetting required

Thanks guys, based on bobert's comments I think I'll be going with the Dyna muff.  Need to keep on good terms with the neighbors.  Will any of the HDs require a rejet?  I'm afraid that's probably more tinkering than I'd be able to do without royaly F-ing up my carb.

OK, now that I think I can handle!  Thanks!  I think I'll start there and see how I like the sound once the OEM one is drilled.

If you do this, hold the circle at 1 5/8" (worked fine for me)
Others said they have broke drill bits from hitting stuff on the back side, probably from not using the 1 5/8 circle. Be careful.

I myself machined a center plug to fit the center hole, then used a dividers set at 13/16" to draw the circle.

Oh, and don't let your bit go too deep!  We drilled my son's similar to Routy's and knocked something loose inside.  Now it rattles a little...  lol

Oh, oh, oh.... if you do decide to buy a Dyna or such from fleabay, please save yourself some headache and show us the listing first.  There are some shady characters selling them and we've had some bad experiences, but we know who they are.  So learn from our mistakes!

Since you offered (and thank you!), I was considering this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SUZUKI-SAVAGE-LS650-HARLEY-MUFFLER-CONVERSION-KIT-SALE-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3362d3ea5bQQitemZ220701387355QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_1460wt_1165

Seems like it might be a ripoff though if I can go down to the HD dealer and pick up a take off for ~20 bucks.

Yep, that's the seller we avoid!!  Haven't heard any reports lately, but not good stuff a while back.  Maybe somebody new will chime in that has had a decent experience with him, but I'm a doubtin it.

*Edit.. I should say the bad guys were from Land-O-Lakes too.  We think they change their ID after they get so many strikes.  So I assume this is the same seller, just different ID.

Good to know.  I actually went through his feedback and found another LS650 owner that bought this from him and contacted him.  He had good things to say about the product but it does seem pricey now that I know what I know!
