Title: EMGO Slip-on Exhaust
Post by sscala on 06/02/11 at 18:45:37

OK so I'm looking to make my bike louder and thats it.  I'm ok with the performance with my 2011 s40, i just want the bike louder.  I was looking into a slip-on being that they are cheaper and around the price i want to spend.  Would these choices below be good? and which one would be louder? Thanks

P.S. would I be able to install these myself being that I've never done this type of work before?

The internals of Emgo mufflers are very simple and easy to modify, either louder or quieter. The trick is how the muffler, in whatever form you end up using it, works with the rest of the intake/exhaust system so you don't mess up the power band. At mean, I assume you want decent power and smooth delivery along with your cool sound.

The "Dunstall style" appears to be the same muffler I got from J.C.Whitney recently.  I put two of them on my S50.  Very easy installation, should be just as easy on an LS650.  They were a little too loud for me so I ordered some fiberglass wrap and rewrapped the baffles.  I'm very happy with them now.  The baffles are very easy to remove.

The problem is they will hit your rear brake lever.

so the Dunstall will hit the rear brake lever on the s40?

and it will def make my bike louder?

is it possible to shorten the length?

Title: Re: EMGO Slip-on Exhaust
Post by MotoBuddha on 06/03/11 at 10:18:57

It's theoretically possible to shorten them, but it would be only slightly less work than building from scratch.

Emgo has a 17" reverse cone megaphone. Part number 80-84030.

have your muff shop fab a 1 3/4" pipe with a 7 deg bend to clear the levrer..
ive paid up to $5 for em and have gotten them free..
length to your choice  theres a old post in the tech section on the muff adaptor im talkin about..

Post by sscala on 06/03/11 at 11:38:06

ok Thanks for all the great advice, but just to be certain the Dunstall or the megaphone will make my bike louder.  i just might have to worry about it hitting the rear lever which can be solved with the 1 3/4" pipe with a 7 deg bend?

The muffler did contact my brake lever when I first installed it.  Everything still functioned fine.  I got a little longer bolt for the mount and used an extra nut as a spacer and it clears fine now.

I installed the shorter EMGO reverse cone (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1250720204/) and didn't have any problems with it hitting either the brake lever or the rod.  It worked perfectly with some shims made from a diet coke can and some high-temp muffler cement stuff.  Getting the old muffler off was the hardest part.  I hadn't worked on the bike much at that point and it was a pretty easy install for someone with little experience.

It made the bike MUCH louder though, so be sure you want that kind of volume.

My Emgo came with three concentric adapter rings. The largest one seemed to create a nice snug fit. The photo shows it only part way on.

The rings can bebought separately if your muffler didn't come with them.

Biggest thing to keep in mind with Emgo is the chrome is some thin, soft, cheap crap. Most chrome cleaners will scratch it.

I painted mine with high temp (BBQ) flat black 10 years ago.

Hope you like the rotor sound of a Huey UH-1D... packing doesn't last very long.

OK well I ended up buying the EMGO Megaphone slip on, now the problem is how do I get the heat shield off?...I see one bolt that seems like the only one holding it on but when I took the bolt off, the shield didn't budge.

Remove the muff and header as 1 piece

then flip over and you'll figure it out.

Oh MAN!  That orange and black looks GREAT!

Pipe looks a little long, but beautiful!  Nice job.

I forgot how pretty, clean and shiny a new one is...   ;)

Thanks!!! Appreciate it!
Question.... Is it being long bad? I was thinking the same thing but i don't know if i am willing to take on the challenge of cutting it, so i just left it at its current length.

Looks good, and I don't think that having a long one is bad  ;D

Here's the 36" Fishtail that I just put on mine. Didn't know any specs on it before I bought it, but I believe it's might be am EMGO. Going to see if I can take the internals out of it and add some baffling soon. My kids say it sounds like a helicopter right now.

Long is fine (trust me!)   Just a little out of the norm around here...   ;D

Of course, I have no idea about mufflers!  Bill is probably right though.  So don't cut it!  At least not until you try it out.  And be sure to let us know how it runs and how it sounds!

ok definitely will...but since I am a new rider, i really dont know much about the bike running lean or rich, how would I know if it's doing either..and what is rejetting?  i see these terms and im like uhh  :-?

If your jets are stock go up 2 on the high speed and 1 on low speed jets,Just take off the fuel bowl and there up in there,Then replace the screws with American Phillip screws,To make it easier to take off if you need to take then off.

Title: Re: EMGO Slip-on Exhaust
Post by WD on 06/17/11 at 14:51:33

Pipe that size should take a 155 main, 55 pilot. So plus 2 sizes on the jets. Stock IS still 150 over 50 isn't it? Savage is set unsafely lean at the factory for US emissions standards. Running the right jets makes it into a decent engine.

Post by arteacher on 06/18/11 at 05:07:40

Stock is 145 over 52.5.
I agree that 155 over 55 would be the place to start.

Are there pictures showing how to do this?  What do you mean go up 2?

Thanks!!  Man, this stuff is confusing the new guy  :-?

It's not hard to do man, 4 phillips head screws on the float bowl (Bottom of the carb, just in front of your battery) might take a little finagling to get it to clear the battery.  Although step 1 would be to see if you have a hex bolt in the middle of the bowl, if so, I would pull that bolt out and drain the bowl into a, well, a bowl...lol
So, drain the float bowl first, then unscrew the 4 brass screws in the corners (use a JIS screwdriver or push up very firmly, replace with steel or stainless american screws if you can).  There will be a couple things that you see when you drop that bowl...you'll see a float and 2 "towers".  The skinny one is where the pilot jet lives, the fatter one is where the main jet lives.  You'll need a regular (straight) screwdriver to pull them out, they unscrew counter-clockwise.  Catch them when they're loose, easy to lose them  ;)
When you look at them really closely, you should be able to see the size of them stamped in.  My eyes are pretty bad, but I can see them no problem when the light is good.  If the main jet is a 145, go up two would bring you to a 155 (although my shop here sells them in 2.5 increments?)....the pilot jet, if it is a 52.5, go up 1 size to a 55.
Just an FYI:  Pilot jet is the low throttle jet, main jet would be the high throttle jet.
And this is a great post, regarding the carb...

What part of NY are you in?
I was down by NYC last week in NJ, and hit the Motorcycle Mall in Belleville, NJ....They had an awful selection of jets, and I was hardpressed to find someone in there that knew what I was talking about...
If you have a dealer nearby, they generally carry a selection.  I picked up some jets a couple weeks ago here in MA for like $3 a jet at Bettencourts, a local Suzuki dealer.  I think others have had success online, but I've heard that Lancer on here has a good kit...

Title: Re: EMGO Slip-on Exhaust
Post by EJID on 06/21/11 at 07:51:30

Most bike shops should have a selection of jets for a Mikuni carb. When I did mine this weekend I took out the stock ones (2005 S40 - Main was 145 & Pilot was 52.5) and took them with me to be sure the new ones would match up.  They're only around $3 each most places I've seen, so it's worth picking up a few different ones to try. Personally I picked up a couple Mains (147.5 & 155 - was going to try 150 but they were sold out of that one) and a couple Pilots (55 & 60 - all the pilots they had were with bleed holes, but I don't think it's a significant difference either way).

Here's a pic of the jets so you know which ones you are looking for (I boogered up the head on the stock Pilot trying to remove it)

Even Harley Davidson has the right jets, just ask for small round Mikuni jets. Late series Evos and many Sportsters used Mikuni carbs. Some had round jets, some had hex jets. They are NOT interchangeable.

No wonder late model S40s are so gutless compared to the older Savages, the Savages had too little jets to start with.

What's next, smog crap on all of them? Washington was going to start allowing only California spec sales in 2011, don't know if it happened or not.

Went for a ride yesterday.  The trip was about 150 miles round-trip and parts of the pipe turned colors.  It looks burnt in some areas.  What to do?!?!

Title: Re: EMGO Slip-on Exhaust

Gold don't worry about. Blue or purple it is still too lean. If it is at the muffler, roughly where the guts are welded in, welcome to the wonder world of Taiwanese parts. Nothing much will help if the guts are acting as heat sinks.

There is a reason my cheap muffler and tail pipe extension are flat black BBQ paint...

Look up the "white spacer mod" and do that, if you haven't already.  Don't  spend big bucks on a jet kit.  If your local bike shop doesn't have a similar jet a size or two larger, order one from motorcyclecarbs or jetsRus.  I would not even fool with the pilot jet unless the bike is requiring too much choke for too long (cold blooded).
