Title: Alternative carb replacements?
Post by 2001HardlyDavidson on 05/29/11 at 10:16:24

This is my first question...about half a year ago I found a site that sold a Mikuni 36 mm carb to replace the BS40 that comes stock on my 2001 Suzuki Savage. Does anyone know of this site? Second... My Savage has a conical K & N filter and a completely unbaffled straight pipe.. ( decibel restrictions are void in Georgia so far) so I don't know if tuning the BS40 would suffice or what. I am better at changing out a carb than trying to take mine apart ( someone before me tried and stripped everything that could be stripped which makes things difficult). Thanks ahead of time for any assistance and have a good day.... THUMPERS 4 LIFE.

Tuning the stock carb would be easier because you have a starting point with the stock jetting.
Going to a different carb puts you in "you're on your own territory"...

Jetting for an open pipe is very difficult,.. especially if the pipe is short.
The powerband will be narrow.

You might consider putting a baffle in there, or adding a Dyna muffler.
Jetting and power will be much better.

Not knowing the pipe length or diameter, or your location/elevation, makes jetting advice impossible,... but, I'd start at a 155#/55# main/pilot, and a 2/3 thickness needle jet spacer...

Probably still run fairly crappy with open pipe though...

That is darn good food for thought, thanks. The exhaust is the stock diameter all the way to the rear exhaust bracket. I welded two bolts to the pipe to locate it right at stock mount. The pipe then extends about 5 inches before the drum brake arm and cable mount. Also thermal wrapped the exhaust ( black painted if that would affect anything) all the way to the beginning of the rear exhaust mount bolt(s). I'm gonna try the stock carb re-build and will check back periodically. Thanks for the help...THUMPERS 4 LIFE.
