Title: Bike is shutting off at stops
Post by Jahoo on 05/22/11 at 14:56:08

The ole savage is shutting off on me when i come to a stop, if i don't keep revving her she shuts off. Float valve possibly? I was thinking about pulling carb and cleaning her again. if this doesn't work I'm out of ideas. anyone have this happen to them?

i don't know. how do i check that? I don't have it an extremly low idle though. And it's not at a high idle.

but it idles fine

If it idles fine, it is not the float valve. If it wants to quit only as you're braking to a stop, I mite suspect too high a float level.

when you shut off the throttle, the rpms will drop below normal

Idle speed screw or Idle mixture?
if it's the idle speed screw, sure must be reving high
Idle mixture turned all the way in? naw can't be that, you said it idles fine.

it may be a dirty air shut off valve, it's the diaphragm under the triangle plate.

and the hesitation may be a dirty slide.

good carb clean can't hurt.

Had identical symptoms due to cracked petcock diaphragm. Put petcock on PRI (bypasses the vacuum actuation) and ride for a few days to check that option. If that heals it - replace petcock. If not - we go from there.

Hesitating,....as a lean fuel hesitating ?

Next time its hesitating, give the choke 1 notch.....mite tell you if its rich or lean.

Try some Sea Foam in the tank then take it out for a ride. Usually helps most fuel related issues.

my bike also have been idleing bad and would die sometimes.

i found a gas leak at the end of the vacum actuation (not on the petcock end but the carb?)

questions;

1. about the fix you mentioned above, can i run on this for a while till i get a new petcock? or is it bad for the bike?

2. when i plug both ends. and put it on prime. do i have to put it back to fuel when im done riding? or leaving it to prime is fine?

thanks in advance

Wes

Any gas in the vac line you have ask where did it come from?
Since the vac port is not on the bottom of the intake, I would assume the gas came from the petcock, bad.

1. it's bad to leave it leaking into the intake.
2. Use prime while riding, and "on" while parked.  This should give you gas to run the engine and the auto-off feature will prevent flooding while off.
