Title: Ideas for exhaust headers, mufflers, etc.
Post by Gyrobob on 05/21/11 at 03:57:03

We were impressed with how HEAVY the stock exhaust systems were when we took them off and cut them up as part of our double RYCA build.

We'll be using the stock header pipe and RYCA muffler initially, but we are starting to ponder something lighter.

The pics below were taken from the gallery here.  There are undoubtedly a bunch more "interpretations" of how to effectively and/or stylishly get the hot air out the back.

We'd like something that is a lot lighter, not too hard to fabricate, and doesn't look too dorky.

Ideas?

Harley dyna/sportster stock castoff or screaming eagle muffler. Look in the Tech section and search. The harley ID is slightly larger than the header OD. Most people use a cut up can of some sort to fill the gap before clamping it down. I got a peice of driveline tubing from work cut it to about 10 inches long, expanded one just a wee bit to it would slip over the header, the other end was a perfect fit to slip into the harley muffler. I had the header end of the tubing bent at 10* outward and welded it all together. Looks awesome, sounds awesome, cost me $20 on ebay for the muffler, $5 at MIDAS for the bend. If you do not get the 10* bend you will soot up your rear brake and you rear brake cable will rub on the muffler. If you get the extension without the bend the muffler will hit the swingarm.

The last photo in the sequence shows a scrambler set-up. I like the looks, but question the function.

No heat shield on the pipe running right next to inner thigh? Burnt pants at best.

Forward controls on a scrambler?

Why was the stock heat shield retained (next to foot brake)?

Yeah, let's wrap the exhaust around the cylinder, because it doesn't get hot enough. And heating the gas in the float bowl is always a good idea.  ;D

Motobuddha said in reply #10, "Yeah, let's wrap the exhaust around the cylinder, because it doesn't get hot enough. And heating the gas in the float bowl is always a good idea."

I agree.  What could possibly be the advantage for an exhaust routing like that?  My suspicion is there is no advantage -- that "concept" is to exhaust systems as the concept of hangy-down ankle-pants is to the trouser industry,... simply there for a reaction.

Hi Buck...
That is my scrambler project.  The pipe is going to be rerouted a little lower and tucked in closer to the frame since I've removed my air box and battery box.  The battery is now flipped 90 degrees in the frame (similar to the Ryca) and allows for much more room for the pipe to be tucked in.

The heat sheild is on because the fab shop left it on after they took the old pipe off.  The forwards will be removed when I get my mid controls fabbed.

It's obviously not finished in this pic.  It was taken about 15 minutes after I unloaded it after coming home from the fab shop (pipe and seat mounts).

Extremely interesting project.  Excellent work on your part.

Who is doing the exhaust work?  One thing you might consider (for the rest of us) is to find some way for the fabricator to remember how he did that pipe.  It could be lucrative for him and helpful to us if he could reproduce that pipe for sale.

Watch your idle speed- that slow and you are probably starving the cam bearing journals of oil. Should idle at 1100 +- 100 rpm.

Thanks Gyrobob.  That is actually something that had not occured to me.  After the adjustments are made, I'll ask him to quote a price for the board members who want to go this route. I used Hustler Machine in Memphis, TN.  pretty good folks.  Was quoted $300 (and billed) to use the first 6" of my factory header and my $50 emgo reverse cone shorty (17") muffler and then fab everything that connects the two with 2" stainless.  I'm repacking the Emgo baffle with some pretty hefty packing so hopefully the fact that he went with 2" tube wont make too much difference sine the inner tube on the factory header is 1.6" ID (I think).

Thanks for the compliment and I'll check on a price for the board members.

Mine looks like this:

There is a 12" baffle at the end.

Jumpin Jiminy!  That exhaust system must be 20lbs lighter than stock.  How loud is it?  Did you rejet the carb?

Very loud, but not as loud as without the baffle.  Yes, I am in the process of figuring out the jetting.  I decided to wait since I ordered a new carb from Lancer last week.

I am thinking I like the position of that muffler, sitting on top. It sucks to remove the oil filter and have some oil find its way on the pipe below. My bike always smokes for a week after I do the oil.

I think the Suzuki tuned pipe works the best.

As usual, there are several sub-threads going in this thread, but I would like to say to mpnoffi that his explanations for further work on his scrambler make sense. Show us a picture of the completed job!

He uses  an Emgo 17" reverse cone megaphone muffler. It looks good. Question:  that muffler has an accessible baffle that allows more packing to be added?

I believe that's the muffler that Ryca is using on their kit bikes. On the 'Ryan's bike' YouTube video it's loud. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByNxIZh9Kew&feature=feedu

I'm doing a Ryca kit (it's not here yet), but I'm concerned about becoming cop bait with a non-Harley running a loud muffler. So I would add packing, if it's possible.

Thanks for the kind words Buck.  Between work and family, this project is going s l o w  for my taste.  I hope to have final pics sometime in the next few weeks though.

I read about these emgo reverse cone shorties over on the triumph board.  A lot of those guys are switching over to them and modding them a bit to keep them from being so loud.  The vids they post sound really good.  Here are a couple of links to their discussions.  Hope this helps you and others looking for exhaust ideas...
