I noticed some on here are having too much trouble removing the oil "pan" bolt when doing a change. My wife found a set of Stanley flat rachet wrenches at Wal Mart. I use the 12 or 14 MM rachet end? It can be adjusted so there is room to hit it with your palm, even under the bike. I change my oil by bumping the wrench with my palm to take it off and tighten it back plus one jerk to make sure. I have never changed the washer 'cause it seals like my cars. Of course, some of you will have to get it loose from the ape that tightened it previously, but after that it's no problem. If you are the ape that tightened it previously---STOP IT. Unnecessary. IHTH Boofer

Older bikes have 17mm plugs... so buy the right size. ;D

Floorjack under the center "skidplate". 2x4 under the kickstand. Lower the truck tailgate and tie bike to tailgate strap/cable. Front wheel wedged between two cinder blocks, back wheel resting in an old car/truck rim.

I've used all of those with success...

Wow,....I don't remember the plug removal part of it much, (I forget quickly anymore) but I still remember not being able to find the plug !Not having a book, and not yet having this forum, I remember telling a friend that my bike didn't have a plug........or any way to check the oil either,......told him I thought the engine must be permanently lubricated ;D Later I got a hold of my long distance bro, (he had an s40) and he kinda filled me in on a few of the basics :)

No thumper, That's what I'm saying. I use it with the bike on the sidestand. No need for props, and yes I figure about anyone on here with a set of wrenches can find the one that fits. The flat ratchet fits snugly against the bolt shoulder and can be rotated away from the ground far enough to bump it loose.

My "garage" choices are/were old tumbledown Model T Ford shed, 1921 cow barn (full of wood boring bumble bees), 400+ year old white oak tree (blew down 4/19/11), or the front porch of the manor house (1840 plantation "river house").

A couple straps on the front end loader bucket should make for interesting tire removal. ;D

I lay on the floor next to the bike, reach under, across the bottom of the engine & put a wrench on the plug & slap down on it.. no blocks, no straps, just a plain ol Craftsman metric wrench & a shallow pan. I think it used to be a cake pan..no hassle.

Ditto. On the ground, on the sidestand, 12 point box wrench, cheap aluminum cake pan from grocery store. Never been a problem.

17mm cheapy box wrench. Aluminum roasting pan. No props for years, and with Intruder shocks the bike is tipped forward and drains more fully.

If the fire ants have gotten annoying guess where the oil drains...

I have bumblebee holes at the base of garage walls. That's where mine gets dumped.
