Title: shotgun scabbard?
Post by JohnBoy on 05/12/11 at 18:37:51

Living in AZ, the state that just voted to create a "state gun", I need to figure out how to mount a shotgun scabbard to my bike.
I picked up a Mossberg 500 20 gauge with a 22"barrel. Boy, is that fun to shoot! The public gun range is 15 miles up I-17 and with gas at 3.80 a gallon it doesn't make sense to take the truck.
Any ideas?

Oh, by the way, the state gun is now the Colt Army .45 "peace maker" from 1873.
So...How's that "Peace" working out?
JB

Easy if you have buckhorn handlebars. Broom handle holder that gets screwed to the wall. Clamp the handle clamp or two on your bar's upright section. Screw on a plate, strap scabbard to plate.

That's how I carry my cane.

JOhnboy,

I have been mulling that one myself.  I am thinking about something more on the side mount idea.  I have a scabbard from the ATV that I was going to use.  I often ride over to a friend's to shoot and had rather ride the bike.

As a side note. when I was with him we went to a gun shop and I bought a .22, semi-auto.  It was a cheapy (but my son loves it) but it looks like a M-16; all black, carry handle, pistol grip, box type mag, etc.  Anyway, how to get it home, since I am on the bike.  I used the strap on the rifle to put it on my back and off I go.  Made it home with no incidents. :D

But  would not want to do that every time.  :-/

A scabbard on your back would allow you to whip out the shotgun faster when you run into zombies.

State gun, now that's cool!  I've got a .45 Peacemaker, replica of course, couldn't afford the real thing.

the only problem with a shotgun vs zombies is the numbers....
sure, its awesome on 3 or 4, but face 20 or so, and reloading and the bulk of ammo are problematic..........

But it should buy enough time to turn around and take off. After  all, zombies are rather slow.

With all the creative minds at loose here I am sure you guys could come up with a belt feed application just for Zombies.

Maybe a short belt in the scabbard, say half dozen rounds to  kinda get their attention?  Then the long belt from the saddlebags to deliver a little shock and awe.

Are we talking 'dawn of the dead' type zombies or 'resident evil' type zombies?

Slow moving zombies give me a broadsword and a ma deuce  8-)
Fast moving, a thomson, ma deuce and a m14, that and a moat otta slow the basterds down.

I'd love to see something that mounts along side the forks, maybe with a swivel(for shooting those zombies in front of you)? :)

speaking of zombies ....

you should read "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (with ultraviolent zombie mayhem)".  It's laugh out loud funny, at least if you're familiar with the non-zombie version.

"Sense and Sensibility (& Sea MOnsters)"  is not nearly so funny.

I've never carried a long gun on the bike - Seems like the sling over your shoulder, while effective, might attract a bit of attention!  I once almost lost my carry pistol from vibrating out of a IWB holster, so some sort of retention device is needed.

I think I'd also think "ATV scabbard", tie it on a few different configurations, see how it feels.  You could come up with some kind of easy-release attachment for the scabbard to pop it off when you're not carrying the gun.

Thanks for trying to bring the thread back to the topic.  I am thinking the ATV scabard as well.  I guess I just need to go outside and try it.  But wait, I still have work to do.

Ya might be able to modify a replica of the leather WWII scabbard for the M1 Garand.  I know I have seen historical pics of them used on courier motorcycles.

V-twin Mfg sells all the army bike scabbard stuff. Not as fun as "afro-engineering" though...

IMO the reason for a scabbard is to protect the gun while you are transporting it. Also, while I am the original gun guy, it is easier on the gun community if anti-gunners don't feel like someone is bearing down on them with a gun at the ready. We may not change the hard core gun grabbers, but those who don't care can be swayed by a little common sense on our behalf. Since the gun is to be uncased only at your destination I would get the best protection for it and adapt it to fit your bike. Then I would buy the best Mel Gibson mask I could find and dress exactly like he did in Mad Max.  ;D

Arizona is a most peculiar place where interesting times abound.

If I recall, the barrel of the 500 is easily removed. Just held in place with the thumb screw in front of the ammo tube. You now have a much shorter package. Put it in a nice carry bag and put it cross ways behind you on the saddle. It won't be any wider than your saddle bags. Strap it down and you're set to go.
