Title: Cell Phones...what ya got?
Post by Wolfman on 05/11/11 at 01:12:18

I hate cell phones and i hate the monthly rates even more!
I got along fine without one untill dad had his massive strokes then i had to be contactable at all times. Kind of in the same boat with mom now.

But man i HATE them monthly rates! Especialy now with things getting a bit costly...food, gas ect. Like to ditch it but cant.
What id like is one with decent coverage and roll over minutes cause i rarely use the stupid thing. But 75 bucks a month for two phones is just a bit much. I dont text or use it to search the web, just the odd call out and whatever comes in. Verizon is a Pain.

What kind of phones you got(simple, not smart phones) and what kind of plans/rates for them? Cant seem to find one with roll over minutes, pay as you go ect.

+1.. Got my Trac phone at Wal Mart over
a year ago.. All I need and use it for is
when I am on the road. I don't text or
take pics. They have different models
to choose from. You choose your monthly
rate by which plan you choose. Their again
are several ones.
Best of all, your mins roll over to the next
month. I've been very happy with mine. :) kim

Have a blackberry that my job pays for. Other that that I dont even have a phone, and I think if I ever quit I would keep it that way, I find the less I talk to people the better off I am :)

I need to rethink the cell phone situation in the family.  I only use mine when riding so the CFO can call me if she needs something (bluetooth helmet stuff) or to keep in touch with other riders in an emergency.

I don't text, I don't need internet access.  I use to use it for music while I ride, but XM radio does that now.

CFO's cell phone is almost always dead when she does go to use it (and usually only to find each other when shopping).

The kids..  about time they paid for their own phones.

I really need to look into the "pay as you go" stuff.

Don't you have to buy a new card for those trac phones every year even if you don't use it.

I'm the opposite, my wife and I are tech freaks and we both use our phones a TON, we've gotta have the latest smart phones and we usually hack and modify them from there.

I have to have a bunch of minutes for work, I'm a Patrol LEO supervisor, so I'm in a car 12+ hours a day and constantly have people calling for advice, questions, etc, plus calling for investigations, etc.  Lieutenant's and above get office phones, but I'm just a lowly working Sergeant.

I'm with Verizon with a Droid X, the wife has a Droid 2 but is waiting for the Bionic.

Trac phone ! ($19-$39)
Service $99 a year, incl 300 minutes (600 if you catch a deal)
You can buy xtra minutes if needed
You never loose your minutes as long as you pay the $99 every year.
I have over 1,000 minutes on mine. I have never bought any xtra minutes. I make short calls only, and give my # to a selective few only.

I know, there are different plans out there,....what ever fits you best.

Yeah!  I'm with topgunz!  Gotta have my smart phone!  Loved my old BlackJackII, Windows phone with Word, Excel, etc.  "Upgraded" to new Windows Phone 7, Samsung Focus.  I actually love the phone, but not as happy with the Windows update.  Its more restrictive.  (although I do have a nice SuzukiSavage.com tile right on the front screen.  I'm here in a single touch!)

Anyway, not what you asked for, but what I wanted to say is once you start, you'll probably get hooked.  Phones can do so much these days.  Even for non-techies.  So go and compare them, see what you think you might eventually like to do with one, and go from there.  If you really only want one for emergency calls, then yes, Trac phone is the way to go!

I have an AT&T phone. Only 20 bucks a month, but I'm on a family plan. Make sure that you're in the coverage area with whatever provider you choose though. I've tried verizon, immix and t-mobil phones in the past. I couldn't even get service in my own house, let alone in the mountains. (Oh wait, that's where I live.  ::)) With att&t I get service pretty much everywhere I go.

I got a "double minutes for life" Tracphone in February from Wallyworld for $15.00...
I've made two phone calls since then... Wo hoo!...
RadioShack just had one on sale for $10.00 last week.  Don't know if it's still on sale...

You buy minutes/time, with no contract... at minimum use, it should cost as little as $80.00 a year...  ... or for $99.00, you can get 400/ doubled to 800 minutes, good for a full year's use, and leftover minutes are carried over if you buy again next year...

Nobody calls me.... :(...
Oh, wait,.. I never gave anyone my number... I like it that way... ;D...

Just get a cheap, used, Motorola Razr phone and take it to a T-mobile shop for a sim card and no monthly plan.  The card will run you 50 bucks or so, and should come with 250 minutes to get you started.  Then buy T-mobile refill cards off Ebay or Pinzoo.  The 1000-minute refill is about $95 and that will last you a year if you're not too gabby.. works out to 7~8 bucks a month.

I was pleasantly surprised after I lost my phone one time (flew off on the road somewhere) and bought a new one from newegg, took it to the same T-mobile shop and they gave me a new sim card, same phone number and everything, no charge, and I reclaimed the 600 minutes that were left on the old card.  :D

...as Boule’tard said:

I too have an old but, very capable (and kinda bricky) Nokia N95
with a tmobile pay-as-you-go sim card, works fine for me
and $20 credit last forever, specially if you call no one
and just let others call you.   :D

BTW, it's VERY important to "reprogram" your web-browsing
settings, this way your phone cannot "decide" to suddenly
connect to your service provider's signal and drain your credit;
now you can only connect to wifi hotspots or your home network.

8-)

Mot tundra - has rubber seals and gaskets all over the place - tends to
help keep the water/sand out of the thing along with a hard rubber
case to hold up shock a bit better - so far so good on the 2nd one
- the first one took a beach side dunk I guess and didn't like that.

Im not in a contract and havent been for over two years, pay month to month. Cheapest family plan verizon has.
Id looked at the trac phones but my understanding was your minutes didnt roll over and coverage wasnt real great.
Id like to pitch the thing, lived many many moons without one, but being on the bike and needing to be contactable in case of emergency makes me keep the stupid thing. I dont use but maybe 30-40 minutes a month if that. Dont give out my number either.

Im a tech head myself, built my first computer, self taught. But dont need all the extras you get on a smart phone, got a puter at home for that. Just wanting to shave the monthly bills and still be contactable.

I have a LG Scoop, I bought it from Alltell before Verizon took it over in my area. I pay by day with free unlimited text (which is what I do most often, I rarely use the call function.

i got consumer cellular-  it's at&t, marketed thru AAA ( if you have that)  i'm paying $20 per month - more minutes than i ever get around to using.

I've got friends with fancy internet phones- nice,  but it's still too much $$ for it to be worth it to me

I've got a military spec Samsung with Verizon. I only use it to call people on the west coast. Have a land line for DSL access. Never plugged the phone in. No idea what the cell plan costs, don't care, my wife pays it.

If my father in law wasn't 85 years old and if my wife wasn't on permanent disability my cell phone would be used to sight in my ancient bull barrel Stevens .22 target rifle. Can't stand the thing, always breaking corded earpieces and despise blue tooth units. I tend to throw them out the window when they hit 2 weeks old and will no longer connect to my phone. Drives my wife bonkers, and nobody can figure out why they quit working.

I use a Tracfone. Since you have to buy a card every 3 months I get 60 minutes for around $20. Like some on here I hardly ever use it and then only a minute at a time. I usually carry a balance of 150+ minutes. Bought my daughter a Straight Talk phone. Same as Tracfone, no contract, $30/month get 1000 minutes talk text, internet. Or you can get unlimited for $45/month. Wal Mart. My moblie charger for the cigarette light cost $2 more than the phone. Wife has same phone model so chargers are compatable.

Canada unfortunately is one of the highest cell rates in the world... ugh.

SO, I managed to cut a deal with Rogers by "threatening to cancel" (which I had no intention of doing) and go to another provider (Bell, Fido, w/e).  They said what do you want, and I listed exactly what I wanted and how much I wanted to pay, otherwise I would "walk". After 30 minutes on hold while she talked to her supervisor, she came back and said sure. So, now my bill was originally 110 dollars a month, I now pay an easy 55+tax (no service fee either!).

With unlimited data, and my jailbroken iPhone, I get tonnes of use out of it!

Yep, be glad you got some good plans/rates in the USA because you have to beg/cheat/steal to get one here in Canada!

Ian
