Title: What is that Chinese plastic/rubber stench?
Post by Boule’tard on 05/10/11 at 21:39:54

You know what I'm talkin' 'bout.. walk into a Harbor Freight and take a whiff. Most any rubber or plastic product out of China has a distinctive.. ahh.. reekage that nobody knows what it is.  It's only meaning is cheep cheep stuff  :D

The internet doesn't seem to know, but the best explanation I could find is this:

Quote:
"Ummm because its not brand new high quality rubber its a bunch of scrap shoes condomes butt plugs and whatever else they can find melted in to one big ball of toxic shite."

I think I'll add a poll.. we MUST get to the bottom of this!  ;D

A'right you snarky bastard...

I'm gonna' say cosmo/packing grease...
'Cause by now,.. I'm used to it...
... and I think I've grown to like it...
It smells like my workshed... Half my tools come from there... (the other half, I inherited)... (I was out there 'till 11.00pm tonight),...( Mmm!,.. sawdust, solvent, and lube!...)...:-?...

I know it's un-American,.. but I can't afford to be American... ;D...

...If women knew how we felt about Hoppe's no.9, they''d wear a dab behind each ear,... and we'd be enslaved... :-*...
Maybe,  I shouldn't have said that?...:-?...

It isn't just Harbor Freight. Northern Tool carries the same cheap chi-com crap. Wal-mart smells the same way. Emgo motorcycle parts shipments are the worst, gas mask recommended while opening the cartons.

Having been in the intermodal container transport business... if you guys knew just how many drivers/material handlers got poisoned by containers of Asian imports...

The bike shop I was working for was primarily an Emgo direct merchant. 3-4 40' containers of new product every spring and the older stuff stored until it sold. The outgassing from toxic packaging, lead infused potmetal and cheap latex/synthetic rubber... makes Harbor freight smell pretty good.

Hoppe's number 9 huh? I think I'd prefer a couple drops of 100 year old single malt whiskey behind her ears.

The smell doesn't just come from rubber, though that is a strong source.  It was also in this neoprene floor pad (kind of a kid's play mat) that my mother in law picked up at wal-mart. Whooee boy, there's no way I'd let my kids crawl around on that, or keep it in the house, until it had gassed out in the sun a couple of weeks.

The smell isn't necessarily on every Chinese product, so I don't think it is a pesticide. Also, it is often on products not prone to corrosion, like the floor pad.  But it could be that everything out of China is sprayed with some kind of pesticide or preservative, and it is just that the plastics and rubbers absorb more of it for slow-release in the local Harbor Freight.

I think the best theory is that it's part of an unknown recycled mixture.  But that particular smell is so distinctive, it has to be something we can identify, dammit!  Maybe they add a polymer rejuvenator or something to make whatever junk thrown in the pot mix together with other plastics/rubbers, into a useable material. A general solvent that facilitates the blending of 'close enough' materials.

I know! Kind of like the smell of gasoline, it has positive associations and grows on you.

Having mis-spent my youth in various eduacational facilities...
I've been advised that if it smells, it's not good for you to smell it.
So stick to sniffing vodka.   ;D

As I get older, smells seem to bother me more.  Anybody else like that?  But I guess I'll have to pay attention better the next time I go to Harbor Freight.

Now what's this Hoppes No. 9 stuff?  I swear I don't know it, believe it or not.  WD's whiskey would work for me, but I'm unusual...  lol

I do love gasoline smell.  My father had a dry-cleaning business when I was little.  I'm not sure how it all worked, but back in those days, gasoline and some other solvents were used in the industrial machines.  Talk about a distinctive smell.  But surprisingly I learned to love it.

Having unloaded my fair share of freight trucks over the years, I'm of the opinion they spray their cardboard boxes with something to try to keep the mold and mildew down due to all the moisture in the trailers they have to pass through. (over the road trailers are the worst as many are not kept in good condition) There's something about the plastic strapping they use that leaves a greenish grey residue on your gloves also!

Hoppes No.9, Piglett... ;)... gunpowder solvent...

... "a dab behind the ear", is an old shooters joke, probably play on Chanel No.5 perfume...
Personally,... a little dab of bacon-drippings behind the ear would have me entranced...
;)...

That stench is a minor example of what the air in china smells like
I spent more weeks than I want to remember in the south china manufact areas a few years ago - so I think after the solvent odor and
concrete dust settles out the stench you smell is what is left.
